Telecom carriers introduce service to simplify boarding

Users of Pass app provided by three major telecom carriers — KT, SK Telecom and LG Uplus — can board their airplanes without physical resident registration cards or boarding passes from Monday for inbound flights. [SKT, KT, LG UPLUS]

Three telecom carriers launched a mobile boarding service that allows inbound travelers to board their flights without a physical resident registration card or boarding passes, simplifying the departure process.

The simplified protocol links the airport service with an identity authentication app dubbed “Pass” that will be provided by the three carriers — KT, SK Telecom and LG Uplus.

Launched in 2018, the app allows users to digitally access their resident registration cards or driver’s licenses.

To benefit from the mobile boarding service, travelers need to be pre-registered in the Pass app. If the personal information on the boarding pass and Pass app matches, a QR code and boarding information will automatically be updated on the app, thus freeing travelers from carrying physical residential cards or airline tickets for inbound flights.

This service is currently available at four airlines — Jeju Air, T’way Air, Hi Air and Eastar Jet — with Air Seoul set to join the list later in the month. More airlines will also join the service soon.

A total of 14 airports will allow this simplified domestic departure, including Gimpo International Airport, Gimhae International Airport, Jeju International Airport, Daegu International Airport, Cheongju International Airport, Yangyang International Airport, Muan International Airport, Gwangju Airport, Ulsan Airport, Pohang Airport, Gunsan Airport, Sacheon Airport and Yeosu Airport.

About 70 million subscribers are currently registered to the Pass app and can digitally access their identification information.
