Korea's shipbuilding giants drop anchor in Singapore for Gastech 2023

Korea's three biggest shipbuilding companies — HD Hyundai, Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean — are set to showcase their eco-friendly ship technologies at Gastech 2023, the world's largest gas energy exhibition, commencing in Singapore on Tuesday.

The event is expected to attract over 40,000 attendees from approximately 100 countries and around 750 companies for its 51st edition.

HD Hyundai will display scale models of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) ship, re-liquefaction device and dual-fuel engine within their 330-square-meter exhibition space. Throughout the event's duration, HD Hyundai will secure 16 technology certifications and technology collaboration MOUs with global organizations such as DNV (Det Norske Veritas) and LR (Lloyd's Register).

The company plans to bring its CEO and senior executives alongside more than 50 employees in sales, research and development, and engineering. Its objective is to engage with global industry counterparts in the shipping and delivery sectors to introduce cutting-edge technologies and discuss the future of the shipbuilding and maritime industry.

Samsung Heavy Industries will showcase its technological expertise, with a particular emphasis on floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) production facilities of which it holds a leading position in the market, in its independent exhibition area of approximately 216 square meters.

Samsung Heavy Industries will also be represented by its CEO at Gastech 2023 alongside over 20 executives responsible for sales and technical aspects.

On Thursday, Samsung Heavy will host a seminar dedicated to future eco-friendly technologies aimed at addressing global climate change concerns. The event will bring together major clients like Shell, BP and Petronas. Additionally, Samsung Heavy is poised to enter into a technology collaboration agreement with Lattice Technology, with a specific focus on grid-type pressure tank technology.

Meanwhile, Hanwha Ocean is set to display a lineup of eco-friendly vessels at Gastech 2023, including a LNG carrier equipped with the Greenship specification designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, an ammonia carrier, a liquefied CO2 carrier, and a LNG-FPSO (Floating production, storage, and offloading) unit that it constructed as the world's first.

Hanwha Ocean is pursuing research collaborations and certification acquisitions for state-of-the-art technologies in partnership with global classification societies. They are collaborating with the French classification society BV (Bureau Veritas) to conduct joint research on a new method for rapidly assessing the structural strength of independent cargo hold structures, which will be applied to dual-fuel container ships.
