The line at the departure gate in Incheon International Airport was bustling with hundreds of people lined up with their passports and boarding passes in hand Tuesday afternoon, waiting for what could be one hour or so just to begin their security screening.

지난 화요일 오후 인천국제공항 출국장은 여권과 탑승권을 든 수백명의 사람들로 북적이고 있었다. 이들은 한 시간은 걸릴지도 모를 보안검색이 시작되기를 기다리는 중이었다.

One group of travelers slipped into the fast-track line, bypassing all the rows and queues, and began their security screening after only a brief pause for a quick scan of their faces. The whole process took less than 10 seconds, and they didn't have their passports or boarding passes out. The only difference between the two groups was that the latter registered their face and personal information to get access to the new Smart Pass service.

이때 한 무리의 여행객들이 패스트 트랙 라인으로 들어와 줄 서 있는 사람들을 지나 자신들의 얼굴을 잠깐 스캔한 후 보안검색을 시작했다. 이 모든 과정은 10초도 걸리지 않았고, 그들은 여권이나 탑승권도 꺼내지 않았다. 두 그룹 사이의 유일한 차이점은 후자의 그룹은 새로운 스마트패스 서비스에 접근할 수 있도록 그들의 얼굴과 개인정보를 등록해놓은 사람들이었다.

The Smart Pass service, which became available on July 27, allows passengers to begin the passenger security check without a one-on-one identity inspection by airport officials.

지난 7월 27일부터 시작된 스마트패스 서비스는 공항 직원들의 일대일 신원검사 없이도 보안검색을 시작할 수 있도록 해주는 것이다.

The facial recognition machine automatically checks a person's identity and boarding passes when they stand in front of it, and then lets them enter. It generally reduces the boarding procedure time by up to 40 percent, according to the airport.

안면 인식 기기는 사람들이 그 앞에 서면 자동으로 개인의 신원과 탑승권을 체크하고 들어갈 수 있게 한다. 인천공항에 따르면 이 기기는 탑승절차에 들어가는 시간을 최대 40% 정도 줄여준다.

"I was able to get past the departure gate in literally less than 3 seconds," said Lee Moon-sook, a woman in her 50s who recently traveled to Japan using the Smart Pass service. "I arrived at the airport just 40 minutes before departure due to the traffic, but I was able to make it on the plane on time.“

스마트패스 서비스를 사용해서 최근 일본으로 여행을 다녀온 50대 이문숙씨는 “3초도 안 걸려서 공항 출국 게이트를 지날 수 있었다”며 “교통 체증 때문에 출발 시간 겨우 40분 전에 공항에 도착했는데 제시간에 비행기를 탈 수 있었다”고 말했다.

To utilize the system, travelers need to register their faces on the ICN Smartpass mobile app or via the airport's self-check-in kiosks at least 30 minutes before their scheduled departure. The entire registration process takes less than 10 minutes. Both Koreans and foreign nationals can use the service. The registered facial recognition information remains valid for five years from the date of registration.

이 시스템을 이용하기 위해 여행객들은 출발시간 최소 30분 전에 인천공항 스마트패스 모바일 앱이나 공항의 셀프체크인 키오스크에 얼굴을 등록해야 한다. 한국인이나 외국인이나 모두 이 서비스를 이용할 수 있다. 등록된 얼굴 인식 정보는 등록일로부터 5년간 유효하다.

"Some major airports in developed countries like the United States have already implemented the service, but what distinguishes Incheon International Airport with them is that we maximized passengers' convenience and let them input their information through an app," Lim Jun-hwan, director at the fast travel team at Incheon International Airport, said.

인천공항 스마트서비스팀 임준환 팀장은 “미국 같은 선진국의 일부 주요 공항들은 이미 이 서비스를 도입했다”며 “하지만 인천국제공항이 그 공항들과 다른 점은 여행객들의 편의성을 극대화하고 앱을 통해 그들의 정보를 입력할 수 있도록 한 것”이라고 말했다.

"It is faster, and also increases safety dramatically, as the facial recognition system is able to recognize 512 different features of each person's face," Lim said. "It is free from falsification or duplication — even more accurate than humans checking them one by one.”

그는 또 “안면 인식 시스템은 더 빠를 뿐 아니라 한 사람 얼굴의 512개 다른 특징을 인식할 수 있어서 안정성도 극적으로 높다”며 “위조와 복제로부터도 자유롭고, 인간이 한 사람씩 확인하는 것보다 정확하다”고 말했다.

The service is available at all six departure gates and 16 boarding gates at Incheon Airport. The usage of the service is currently limited to passengers who travel with Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jeju Air, Jin Air, T-way Air and Delta Air Lines. The full implementation of the system across all facilities at Incheon Airport is scheduled for April 2025. Physical passports and boarding passes are still mandatory for immigration checks conducted by the Ministry of Justice.

이 서비스는 인천공항의 6개 출국장과 16개 탑승구에서 사용할 수 있다. 이 서비스의 활용은 현재 대한항공, 아시아나항공, 제주항공, 진에어, 티웨이항공, 그리고 델타항공 이용객들로 한정돼 있다. 인천공항의 모든 시설에서 이 시스템을 사용할 수 있는 시기는 2025년 4월로 예정돼 있다. 법무부가 담당하는 출입국 심사에서는 종이 여권과 종이 탑승권 소지가 여전히 의무다.

A total of 140,811 people have already registered for the service as of Aug. 31. Around 1,300 travelers use the Smart Pass every day, with around 3 percent of them being foreign nationals.

지난 8월 31일 기준 총 14만811명이 이미 등록을 마쳤다. 하루에 약 1300명의 여행객이 스마트패스를 사용하고 있으며 이중 3%는 외국인이다.
