The Korean women’s volleyball team has only a slim chance of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics after their 3-1 loss to the United States at the road to Paris qualifier in Lodz, Poland on Wednesday.

한국 여자배구 대표팀이 수요일 폴란드 우치에서 열린 파리올림픽 예선 경기에서 미국에 3-1로 패함에 따라 2024 파리올림픽 본선 진출 가능성이 희박해졌다.

Korea won their first set against the U.S. team 25- 20, dominating in kills 17-13, but they came up short in the next three, losing 25-17, 25-19 and 25-17.

dominate: 압도하다
kill: 강타 (리턴이 불가능할 정도로 세게 때리는 공격)
come up short: 열심히 노력했으나 못 미치다

한국은 미국을 상대로 압도적으로 많은 강타를 기록하며 17-13으로 앞서갔고 1세트를 25-20으로 승리했다. 이후 3세트 내내 분투했으나 25-17, 26-19, 25-17로 패했다.

It was their last chance to qualify for the Olympics this year. The top two teams in Lodz automatically earn a spot.

이번 올림픽 예선은 한국이 올림픽 본선에 진출할 올해 마지막 기회였다. 우치에서 열리는 예선의 상위 2개 팀은 자동으로 올림픽 본선 자리를 확보한다.

The top-ranked teams by June 2024 will earn a spot in Paris. There are 12 spots each for the men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments.

2024년 6월까지 FIVB 랭킹에서 최상위 팀들은 파리 올림픽 본선 자리를 얻는다. 올림픽 남·여 배구에는 각각 12팀이 출전한다.

Six teams will have already qualified through their tournament wins, and France, the host country, earned its spot automatically. Korea is now vying for one of five remaining spots.

6개 팀은 올림픽 예선을 통해 출전 자격을 확보할 것이다. 프랑스는 개최국 자격으로 자동으로 자리를 확보했다. 한국은 남은 5개 자리를 위해서 경쟁하게 된다.

The Korean women’s team loss on Wednesday followed a disappointing finish at the 2023 Volleyball Nations League in Suwon, Gyeonggi in July.

follow: 뒤를 잇다

한국 여자 배구팀의 수요일 패배는 7월 경기도 수원에서 열렸던 2023 발리볼네이션스리그에서의 실망스러운 결과 이후에 이어진 결과이다.

They will next compete at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, where they will have a chance to notch more wins and boost their world ranking.

한국은 이후 중국 항저우에서 열리는 아시안 게임에 출전한다. 한국은 본 대회에서 승리를 올리고 세계 랭킹을 끌어올릴 기회를 맞이할 것이다.
