The Korean women’s volleyball team has plummeted from 14th to 35th on the FIVB world ranking in the space of two years after winning just one of 29 games since the end of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

한국 여자 배구팀이 2020 도쿄 올림픽 이후 2년간 29경기 동안 1승 만을 기록하며 FIVB 세계 랭킹 14위에서 35위로 급락했다.

Korea sat in 14th place going into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in August 2021, when the team led by talismanic former captain Kim Yeon-koung reached the semifinals, but have been on a rapid decline since then.

한국은 2021년 8월 열린 2020 도쿄 올림픽 당시, 승리의 여신 김연경 전 주장이 팀을 4강으로 이끌며 랭킹 14위에 올랐지만 이후 급격한 하락세에 접어들었다.

After Kim and ace Yang Hyo-jin retired from national duty, the team lost all 12 games in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) last year, all 12 games in the VNL this year and have managed just one win — 3-1 against Croatia at the Volleyball Women’s World Championship in October 2022.

한국은 김연경과 에이스 양효진이 국가대표에서 은퇴한 후 작년 VNL에서 12경기 전패했으며 올해 대회에서도 12경기 전패를 기록했다. 대표팀이 이들의 은퇴 후 승리를 거둔 것은 2022년 10월 세계 선수권 대회에서 크로아티아를 상대로 한 3-1 승리가 유일하다.

This year's VNL outing was possibly even worse than last year. Korea not only lost 3-0 to Croatia, but also only won three sets in the entire tournament; in 3-1 losses to Germany, Bulgaria and China.

올해 VNL 출전은 작년보다 더욱 심각했다. 한국은 크로아티아에 3-0 패배를 당했을 뿐 아니라 대회 동안 3세트 밖에 따내지 못했다. 이 3세트는 독일, 불가리아, 중국에 3-1로 패하며 얻었다.

China and Japan, on the other hand, now sit in sixth and eighth place on the rankings respectively after managing to reach the VNL quarterfinals.

반면 중국과 일본은 VNL 8강전에 진출한 뒤 각각 랭킹 6·8위에 올랐다.

The ranking difference between the other Asian countries is concerning for Korea, who are looking to reach the 2024 Paris Olympics, as the FIVB ranking will determine the countries that compete at the Olympics.

타 아시아 국가들과의 랭킹 차이는 2024 파리 올림픽 진출을 노리는 한국에게 우려스러운 부분이다. FIVB 랭킹이 올림픽에 출전하는 국가들을 결정하기 때문이다.

Among the 12 countries that will participate in the Games, five will land in the competition based on the FIVB ranking by June 2024, prioritizing continents that do not have qualified teams in the competition.

올림픽 배구에 참가하는 12개 국가 중 5개국은 2024년 6월 FIVB 랭킹을 기반으로 대회에 진출한다. 단 이때 올림픽에 출전하는 국가가 없는 대륙의 국가들을 우선시 한다.

Six other countries will reach the tournament through qualifiers, along with France, who will automatically join as host nation.

6개의 나머지 국가들은 예선전을 통해 올림픽에 진출하게 되며 개최국 프랑스는 자동으로 진출한다.

Korea can also reach the Olympics after going through the qualifiers, but that road will be tough, considering they have to beat teams like No. 1 United States and No. 2 Italy.

한국 또한 예선전을 통해 올림픽에 진출할 수 있다. 하지만 세계 랭킹 1위 미국, 2위 이탈리아와 같은 팀들을 이겨야 가능하기에 해당 루트를 통해 진출하는 것은 까다로울 것이다.
