President Yoon and DP leader Lee meet after one year hiatus
President Yoon Suk Yeol and Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung sat down for a brief meeting for the first time in more than a year since Yoon was sworn into office.
The meeting on Tuesday took place at the National Assembly speakers' office and included the presence of Kim Gi-hyeon, the leader of the People Power Party.
Yoon was at the National Assembly to present his case regarding the government's budget for the upcoming year.
Despite having shaken hands at various official events, this meeting marked the first time the two leaders had an opportunity to sit down and talk.
Lee, who became the head of Korea's largest political party in August 2022, had been repeatedly requesting a one-on-one meeting with President Yoon.
However, Yoon had been reluctant to meet with Lee due to ongoing investigations into several scandals, including the Daejang-dong development project.
The meeting between the two during Yoon’s National Assembly speech last year did not happen after Lee and the DP party boycotted the event.
