Tennis fans in Korea will have a chance to watch some their favorite professional players on home turf before the year’s end after all.

한국의 테니스 팬들은 올해가 가기 전 좋아하는 해외 유명 프로 선수들의 경기를 국내에서 직접 볼 수 있게 된다.

The Korea leg of the international “Ultimate Tennis Showdown” — an individual men's tennis league founded by a big-name French coach in 2020 — is officially a month away as the star-studded tournament next comes to Seoul.

프랑스의 한 유명 코치가 2020년 설립한 남자 개인 테니스 국제 리그인 ‘얼티메이트 테니스 쇼다운, (Ultimate Tennis Showdown, UTS)’의 한국 경기가 한 달 앞으로 다가왔다. 스타 선수들이 총출동하는 이 대회는 다음달 개최된다.

Or rather, players will head to Goyang, Gyeonggi for the competition, the third of four UTS events this season. It’s the first time the young tournament will hold an event in Asia, and Korea is the league’s last stop before London hosts the “Grand Final” in December.

young tournament: 시작한지 얼마 되지 않은 토너먼트

올 시즌 UTS 4개 대회 중 세 번째 대회인 이번 한국 대회를 위해 선수들은 경기도 고양으로 향할 예정이다. 시작된 지 얼마 되지 않은 이 대회가 아시아에서 개최되는 것은 이번이 처음이며, 한국은 오는 12월 런던에서 열리는 ‘그랜드 파이널’을 앞두고 열리는 리그의 마지막 기착지다.

The non-traditional tennis tournament brings the men’s game back to Korea, which has rarely seen the highest-level of the game. Korea was not a stop on the top-tier men’s Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour this season, and the last time Korea hosted a tournament was last September, the ATP’s first time back in Korea since 1996.

전통적이지 않은 이 테니스 대회는 최고 수준의 경기는 거의 볼 수 없던 한국에 (최고 수준의) 남자 경기를 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공할 예정이다. 한국은 올 시즌 탑 티어인 세계남자프로테니스협회(ATP) 투어 국가에 포함되지 않았다. 한국이 마지막으로 APT 투어 대회를 개최한 것은 지난 해 9월이었다. 이는 한국이 ATP에 포함된 1996년 이후 최초였다.

Among those locked in are Korea’s Kwon Soonwoo, the first Korean tennis player to win more than one ATP title, who has returned to competing after a shoulder injury, along with Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist who has sat out all but one ATP tournament during the 2023 season due to January knee surgery and a wrist injury that followed.

이번 대회에 참가할 선수들 중 한국 테니스 선수 최초로 ATP 타이틀을 두 개 이상 획득한 권순우가 있다. 권순우는 어깨 부상에서 복귀한다. 참가 선수 가운데는 윔블던 결승 진출자인 호주의 닉 키리오스도 포함돼 있다. 키리오스는 지난 1월 무릎 수술과 그에 따른 손목 부상으로 2023년 시즌 ATP 대회 가운데 한 곳밖에 출전하지 못했다.

Also coming to Korea are France’s Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet, Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, Canada’s Milos Raonic, Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff and the United States’ Reilly Opelka.

이밖에 프랑스의 가엘 몽필스와 리차드 가스케, 카자흐스탄의 알렉산더 부블리크, 캐나다의 밀로스 라오니치, 독일의 얀 레나드 스트러프, 미국의 라일리 오펠카도 내한한다.
