Samsung unveils generative AI model ‘Gauss’

The new AI was unveiled at its forum on Wednesday in Seoul after some business divisions at the tech giant internally banned the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT over security concerns earlier this year.
In its beginning phase, Gauss is primarily used internally among employees and later extended to devices.
Local media outlets reported that the upcoming Galaxy S24 will be the first device fitted with the Gauss AI model, although Samsung Electronics declined to confirm this.
The electronics giant stressed that it prioritized security and ethics issues in developing the generative AI.
“Samsung Electronics strives to abide by AI ethics standards set by the company to ensure security and safety when using AI,” said Kim Dae-hyun, executive vice president of the Samsung Research Global AI Center, in his speech at the forum.
“We will continue to support and collaborate with the industry and academia on generative AI research,” he said.
The Gauss AI system is designed to facilitate tasks such as writing emails, summarizing documents and translating content.
When installed in products, it can “enhance the consumer experience by enabling smarter device control,” according to the company, without specifying further.
Samsung Gauss comes in three models – Gauss Language specializing in generating texts, Gauss Code on software and code description and Gauss Image for image creation.
Samsung said that the Gauss Code is optimized for in-house software development, code description and test case generation through an interactive interface.
“Samsung Gauss Image is a generative image model that can easily generate and edit creative images, including style changes and additions, while also converting low-resolution images to high-resolution,” it said in the statement.
