Bungeoppang: A Comforting Embrace of Tradition [Photo Essay Contest]
The Korea JoongAng Daily hosted its first photo essay contest for elementary, middle and high school students on the theme: “Promote the beauty of Korea to foreign countries." The contest ran from October to November. Photos containing scenes of traditional culture, family love, places to see and tasty treats in Korea were submitted for the contest.

Nestled within the streets and snow-covered landscapes of South Korea you can often find vendors selling Bungeoppang. This delectable treat is a culinary treasure that goes beyond a snack, embodying the past, symbolizing resilience, and creating community moments that reflect Korean culture.
I still vividly recall when I stood in a winding queue on a cold day eagerly awaiting my turn to purchase Bungeoppang. Despite the biting cold, my anticipation for that comforting delight kept my spirits high. Finally, I was greeted by a young entrepreneur who had transformed this snack into a trendy business venture. In an article by Korea JoongAng Daily, it was highlighted that the faces behind these vendors are evolving, as young individuals are embracing this age-old trade with fresh enthusiasm. As I savored my bite and felt its sweet red bean filling melt in my mouth, I experienced more than just physical warmth; it was an embrace of tradition, culture and the kind spirit of the vendor that made this moment truly unforgettable.
Bungeoppang gained popularity after the Korean War as a symbol of hope and return to normalcy. This delicious treat, shaped like a fish and filled with sweet red bean paste, quickly became a part of culture representing the country's comforting culinary traditions.
The snack especially holds value for older generations, taking them back to simpler times. The image of street vendors skillfully making Bungeoppang, the opening and closing of the iron mold and the delightful fragrance bring back memories of a recovering Korea, where Bungeoppang served as a comforting companion.
It is during Korea's winters that Bungeoppang truly shines. When icy winds blow, this cozy treat becomes a physical and spiritual source of comfort warming both hearts and souls.
