Korean horror flick 'Exhuma' invited to Berlin International Film Festival

Horror thriller film “Exhuma” has been invited to the Forum section of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, the film's distributor Showbox said Thursday.

“Exhuma,” or “Pamyo” in Korean, tells a story involving the mysterious events surrounding a group of shamans, a geomancer and an undertaker who are pushing an exhumation process.

The film was directed by Jang Jae-hyun and stars “Oldboy” (2003) actor Choi Min-sik along with Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin and Lee Do-hyun. The film is set to premiere in February.

The Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival presents films that showcase fresh perspectives, test boundaries of convention and offer new interpretations of the world, according to the film festival.

Films such as director Bong Joon-ho’s “Snowpiercer” (2013) and director Kim Tae-yong’s “Late Autumn” (2010), were invited for the same section in the past.

“[The film] asks questions about class along the way, in this playfully subversive take on the genre,” the film festival press office said in its introduction of the film on its site on Wednesday.

The film festival recently announced that it invited action film “The Roundup: Punishment,” which is the fourth installment in the “The Outlaws” (2017) franchise, for the Special Gala category and animation “Cirlce” by Jeong Yu-mi for the Berlinale Shorts 2024 section, earlier this week.

The 74th Berlin International Film Festival, or Berlinale, will kick off on Feb. 15 and run until Feb. 24.
