The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism appointed Kwak Soon-hwa as the new chairwoman of the Korea Craft & Design Foundation (KCDF) on Wednesday.

Her term ends Feb. 20, 2027.

Kwak is a craftsperson who specializes in metal and has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Seoul National University’s College of Fine Art. From 1983 to 2019 Kwak was a professor of craft design at Kyonggi University. After her resignation she opened the craft gallery Space Keumchae.

“The KCDF is an important institution that contributes to the globalization of crafts and design, traditional culture and hanbok [traditional Korean dress], which are the roots of K-culture,” Culture Minister Yu In-chon said in a press release. “We look forward to the new chair elevating the KCDF’s reputation with her expertise and experience, which will in turn aid in promoting the charm of K-culture.”
