[단독 인터뷰] 달리던 차가 날개 펴서 비행..샤오펑 에어로HT '플라잉카' 4분기 주문 시작

글로벌 기업들의 ‘플라잉카’ 개발이 치열한 가운데 이제 관건은 누가 가장 먼저 하늘로 비행체를 띄우는 가에 있다.

중국 전기차 기업 샤오펑의 자회사 샤오펑 에어로HT는 그 첫 번째가 되기 위한 막바지 준비를 하고 있으며, 올해 4분기부터 고객 주문을 받기 시작한다고 밝혔다.

중국 광저우에 있는 샤오펑 에어로HT의 공동 창업자 왕탄(Wang Tan)은 최근 코리아중앙데일리와의 e메일 인터뷰에서 “우리 제품은 땅 위를 달리다가 필요하면 하늘로 날아오를 수 있는 말 그대로 플라잉카”라고 소개하며 “수직 이착륙을 하며 하늘길에만 국한되어 있는 타 기업들과의 차별점”이라고 강조했다.

샤오펑 에어로HT는 8개의 프로펠러를 장착한 이 플라잉카 콘셉트 모델을 지난 1월 세계 최대 가전 전시회 CES2024가 열린 미국 라스베이거스 컨벤션센터 웨스트홀에서 공개해 관람객들의 이목을 끌었다.

2014년 설립된 샤오펑 에어로HT는 그동안 X1, X2 등과 같은 여러 전기로 구동하는 비행체들을 개발해왔으며, X1는 2021년 첫 시험 비행을 시작으로 만 번을 넘는 시험 비행을 거쳤다.

아래는 왕탄과의 인터뷰 요약 중 일부다.

Q. 샤오펑 에어로HT의 플라잉카에 대해 간략한 설명을 부탁한다. 개발은 어디까지 진행됐나.

A. 이미 여러 중요한 연구 개발(R&D) 차원의 검증은 마쳤고 양산을 위한 준비 단계에 진입했다. 최종 디자인은 아직이지만 날카로우면서도 매끈한 표면은 이미 '달 탐사선'을 연상시킬 만큼 매우 미래적이고, 기계학적이면서도 미학적인 디자인을 갖추고 있다.

에어로HT 플라잉카는 하늘, 도로, 심지어 오프로드 주행까지 가능하도록 만들어졌다. 고객들에게 땅에서 타는 자동차에 대한 니즈를 만족시킬 뿐 아니라 여행의 경험까지 제공하려고 한다. 샤오펑 에어로HT는 이 획기적인 제품을 여러 공공 서비스에서 사용할 수 있는 방안을 강구하고 있다.

공식적인 사전 예약 주문은 올 4분기부터 받기 시작할 예정이다. 고객들에게 제품 인도하는 시점은 2025년 4분기로 예정돼 있다.

플라잉카 스펙을 조금 더 디테일하게 설명해달라.

샤오펑의 플라잉카는 약 4~5명의 승객을 수용 가능하며 3축 6륜 구성으로 6x6 전륜구동 및 후륜 조향이 가능하다.

수직 이착륙이 가능한 완전 전기로 구동하는 비행체이며 낮은 고도 비행도 가능하다. 직접 혹은 자율주행 중 모드를 선택 가능하다. 270도 파노라마 2인승 조종석은 넓은 시야를 제공한다.

현대차의 S-A2를 포함해서 여러 플라잉카 콘셉트들이 CES2024에서 소개됐다. 샤오펑만의 차별점이 무엇인가.

여러 전기 수직이착륙기(eVOTL) 개발 기업들이 지금까지 보여준 성과들에 경의를 표한다. 비행체든 플라잉카든, 에어택시든, 이 시장은 현재 블루 오션임은 틀림없고 또 여러 기업들을 수용할 만한 가능성이 있는 시장이다.

샤오펑 에어로HT는 우리만의 독특한 제품성과 ‘차에 날개를 단다’라는 목표에 집중하려고 한다. 우리의 가장 큰 차별점은 우리의 제품은 말 그대로 플라잉카, 즉 자동차이지만 원할 때는 언제든 하늘로 날 수 있다는 점에 있다. 이번에 CES에서 공개된 여러 비슷한 제품들은 대부분 전기 이착륙 항공기로 땅에서의 운행은 힘든 제품들이다.

이미 계약을 체결한 곳들이 있나
최근에 중국 난후 교통과학연구소와 100대 공급 계약을 맺었다.

한국 기업과의 파트너십은 있나. 파트너십 관련 협의 중인 한국 기업은.
현재까지는 한국 기업과의 파트너십은 없다. 하지만 우리가 세운 전략적인 목표에 한 발자국씩 가다 보면 한국 기업들도 언젠간 우리의 파트너가 될 것이라고 믿는다.

With the race to develop a flying car already in full swing, all eyes are now on who will takeoff first.

Guangzhou-based XPeng AeroHT, an affiliate of XPeng, a Chinese EV maker, aims to be the first mover with its plan to launch preorders of its flying car starting in the fourth quarter of this year.

“Our product is a flying car, which is primarily a car but also takes to the skies when needed,” Tan Wang, co-founder and chief designer of XPeng AeroHT said in a recent email interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily.

“Most products from other countries were mainly in the form of electric vertical takeoff and landing [eVTOL] aircraft, lacking the capability for ground transportation.”

A Ferrari-looking supercar with eight propellers caught the public’s eye on the show floor of the CES 2024 trade show last month in Las Vegas.

The displayed mockup was neither completely a car nor a helicopter but a flying car, in the words of XPeng AeroHT, which it says can drive on both land and sky.

XPeng AeroHT has introduced various electric aircraft including X1 and X2. With X1 succeeding in its demonstration flight in 2021, it ran over more than 10,000 flight tests.

Q. Briefly introduce XPeng AeroHT’s flying car product. How far has the development process come so far?

A. Having completed all key tests of the research and development [R&D] validation phase, our modular flying car has now entered the preparation stage for mass production. Though the final design is still in development, it already boasts a futuristic, cyber-mechanical aesthetic, characterized by sharp lines and sleek surfaces, reminiscent of a “lunar exploration vehicle.”

The flying car is designed for flying, road commuting and off-road driving. It not only meets users’ daily ground travel needs but also evolves the travel experience. XPeng AeroHT will continue to explore potential applications in public services for this innovative product.

XPeng AeroHT is thrilled to announce that our flying car will become available to pre-order in the fourth quarter and we aim to deliver to individual users from the fourth quarter of 2025.

Can you give us some more details about your flying car?

The flying car can accommodate four to five passengers and the three-axle, six-wheel configuration enables six-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering.

It is a fully electric piloted aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and low-altitude flight. The 270-degree panoramic two-person cockpit offers a vast field of view.

There have been a few flying cars showcased at CES 2024 including Supernal’s S-A2. Who is your biggest competitor and what is your key differentiation compared to peers?

We respect the achievements these companies have made in the eVTOL field. Whether it’s eVTOL, flying cars, or the market for urban air travel, it is currently a blue ocean market with enough space to accommodate different participants.

XPeng AeroHT will focus on its unique product roadmap and realize the dream of “giving wings to cars.”

We believe the greatest difference lies in that our product is a flying car, which is primarily a car but can also take to the skies when needed. Fundamentally, most of the products previously presented at CES were mainly in the form of eVTOLs, lacking the capability for ground transportation.

Did XPeng AeroHT already create contracts for the flying car?

Recently, the Nanhu Institute of Transportation Sciences has placed an order for 100 units with us.

Do you have any business partnerships with any Korean companies or are you in any talks?

Currently, we are in the R&D stage and do not have any partnerships with Korean companies at this time. But we will achieve our global strategic goals step by step and believe that at the time, enterprises from Korea will also become our partners.
