The festival, one of the biggest cherry blossom celebrations in Korea, is held every spring to commemorate Admiral Yi Sun-sin.

The festival kicked off on Saturday and will end on April 1.

However, Changwon's city government is considering extending the festival period due to the late blossoming of the flowers as a consequence of the recent cold snap and lack of sunlight.

Only 15 percent of the cherry blossoms had bloomed as of Sunday morning, according to a city official.
