Still bent on internal battles, with no vision (KOR)

After the news went viral, candidates for the PPP leadership strongly attacked Han for “showing a lack of human courtesy” and “making a misjudgment from his lack of political experiences.” But Han, former justice minister, refuted such claims, saying he understood the message as an expression of her reluctance to apologize for some reason. He insisted that he kept delivering the message to the presidential office that she must apologize for that.
The truth is yet to be found, but suspicions still linger. First, why did the first lady asked for Han’s opinion about the episode even though it had nothing to do with him. If Yoon’s aides agreed on the need for apology, the first lady could just apologize. Another question is why did the first lady send such a text to Han at that time? Does it mean she couldn’t apologize because Han didn’t reply?
The timing — and background — of the text messages also look suspicious. Only the first lady and Han know exactly what messages went back and forth between them, but why is the alleged conversation being exploited for internal attacks? The Han camp suspects that the presidential office has again intervened in the leadership race, but no one knows the truth. Whatever the case, we are dumbfounded at the strange leak of secret messages.
The PPP, a minority in the National Assembly, should have a heated debate over how to rebuild the lethargic conservative front. But its members are bent on exchanging negative comments between themselves. The governing party faces an uphill battle to restore public support for the conservative party, devise policies to draw the votes from the swing voters and find a strategy to end its old image.
But the PPP is still engrossed in internal battles. Voters don’t know what visions the candidates have before the July 23 convention. People wonder if they have such visions anyway. Without waking themselves up, the party cannot recover the public trust it lost long ago.

공개의 배경부터 의문…권력투쟁으로 증폭돼
비전 제시 없는 이전투구, 후보들 대오각성을
국민의힘 대표 경선이 진흙탕 수렁으로 깊이 빠져들고 있다. 초장부터 ‘배신자’ 공방으로 얼룩지더니 난데없는 ‘문자’ 논란으로 이전투구다. 이 논란은 지난 1월 19일 김건희 여사가 자신의 명품백 수수 의혹과 관련해 한동훈 당시 국민의힘 비대위원장에게 “당에서 필요하다면 대국민 사과를 포함해 어떤 처분도 받아들이겠다”는 텔레그램 메시지를 보냈는데 한 위원장이 메시지를 읽고도 아무 답변을 하지 않았다는 내용이다. 이 때문에 "김 여사는 물론, 윤석열 대통령도 서운해했다"는 게 지난 4일 한 언론의 보도 내용이었다.
이 보도 내용이 확산되자 경선 후보들은 일제히 “인간적 예의가 아니다”(원희룡), “경험 부족이 가져온 오판”(나경원), “난데없는 태세 전환”(윤상현)이라며 한동훈 후보에게 맹폭을 가했다. 하지만 한 후보는 “(김 여사 메시지가) 실제로는 사과하기 어려운 사정이 있다는 것을 강조하기 위한 것으로 기억한다”며 “당시 대통령실에 공적 통로를 통해 강력하게 사과해야 한다는 뜻을 계속 전달했다”고 반박했다.
문자의 진상이 명확히 밝혀지진 않았지만 반드시 짚고 넘어가야 할 대목들이 있다. 우선 명품백 수수 의혹은 한 후보와는 직접 관련 없는 사안인데 왜 김 여사가 사과하는데 한 후보의 의견을 구하려 했느냐는 의문이다. 대통령실에도 정무적 사안을 상의할 참모가 수두룩하다. 내부에서 논의해 사과가 필요하다는 결론이 났으면 그냥 사과하면 될 일이 아니었을까. 굳이 한 후보에게 메시지를 보낸 이유도 궁금해질 뿐이다. 그럼 김 여사가 여지껏 사과하지 못한 이유가 당시 한 비대위원장의 답변을 못 받아서란 말인가.
문자메시지의 공개 배경도 의아하다. 메시지의 내용은 김 여사와 한 후보 둘밖에 알 수 없다. 그런데도 메시지가 대중에 까발려지고 정치적 공격 소재로 활용되는 건 기이한 일이다. 한 후보 측은 또다시 대통령실이 경선 개입에 나섰다고 의심하는 기류다. 하지만 대통령실은 “우리를 경선에 끌어들이지 말라”며 개입설을 강력히 부인했다. 경위야 어떻든 권력 내부의 은밀한 메시지가 노출된 것 자체가 낯 뜨겁다.
무엇보다 보수 재건 방안을 놓고 치열한 토론을 벌여도 시원찮을 여당 전당대회에서 이런 한심한 네거티브만 난무하는 게 과연 정상인가. 지금 국민의힘은 수도권의 입지 회복, 중도층 표심을 붙잡을 정책 노선 개발, 차세대 보수 리더 양성, 꼰대 이미지를 벗을 소통 전략 수립 등 시급한 과제가 수두룩하다. 그렇지만 서로 헐뜯는 얘기만 들리니 국민은 후보들이 어떤 비전을 준비하고 있는지 알 수조차 없다. 아니 그런 비전이 있는지조차 의심스러울 지경이다. 이래서야 어떻게 보수정치가 국민의 신뢰를 되찾겠나. 후보들의 대오각성이 필요하다.
