KCCI kicks off annual Jeju Forum with focus on AI technology

The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) kicked off its annual Jeju Forum, one of the country's largest annual economic gatherings, on Wednesday, with AI technology taking center stage.

The KCCI Jeju Forum will run for four days at The Shilla Jeju hotel. This year's forum, marking the 47th edition, is expected to attract some 600 corporate executives and businesspeople including Hana Bank CEO Lee Seung-lyul and Samsung Electronics President Park Seung-hee through Saturday.

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, who currently serves as the head of the KCCI, attended the event to deliver the opening remarks.

Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok delivered a keynote speech on the first day about the current economic environment and the government’s so-called dynamic economy roadmap initiative that was announced on July 3. The plan aims to revamp Korea’s growth engine by enhancing social mobility, fostering an innovative corporate environment and ensuring fair opportunities, as the country continues to struggle with low productivity and a shrinking population.

Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun and Science Minister Lee Jong-ho are set to take the stage on the second and third days of the forum. Other speakers include Maeil Dairies CEO and Vice Chairman Kim Seon-hee and Supertone CEO Lee Kyo-gu.

One of the biggest sessions during this year’s forum will take place on Friday, with a focus on AI and its application in the workplace.

During the talk, which will be livestreamed on YouTube, SK’s Chey and Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon will engage in a panel discussion about various topics involving AI technologies. The KCCI collected over 1,750 questions from the general public for the panel in advance, according to the business lobby group. The questions that will be addressed during the event include “How is AI changing the workplace?” and “Has there been any fruition in partnerships with global Big Tech companies?”
