Former Busan IPark midfielder Sung Ho-yeong has been handed a 10-game suspension and a 4 million won fine ($3,000) for drunk driving, the K League said Monday.

The punishment follows Busan IPark's decision to terminate Sung's contract after he admitted to drunk driving in Busan on Sept. 8. Initially, he called for a substitute driver but ended up driving himself and was involved in an accident, hitting an unconfirmed object.

Although Sung, 25, is currently without a club, the 10-game suspension will still apply if he joins another K League team in the future. He also has the option to play overseas, where the suspension would not be implemented.

Sung made his professional debut for Busan in 2021, making 72 appearances and scoring five goals. A transfer would be the first of his career.

A versatile midfielder who can also play as a winger or attacking midfielder, Sung was a regular starter for Busan in the 2024 K League 2 season, scoring one goal in 25 matches.

His absence comes during the ongoing K League 2 season, where Busan are competing for promotion to the first division.

As of Tuesday, Busan sits third in the 13-team K League 2 table with 49 points, five points behind league leaders FC Anyang.

In K League 2, only the champions earn direct promotion to K League 1. Two additional teams face the bottom two K League 1 sides in promotion-relegation playoffs to determine which teams secure top-tier spots for the next season.

Last season, Busan finished as K League 2 runners-up but failed to secure promotion after losing in the playoffs to Suwon FC.
