The two by-elections to elect new heads of the Yeonggwang and Gokseong Counties in South Jeolla — the home ground of Korean liberals — are being disproportionately heated with mud slinging and populist promises as election day approaches fast. The battles are led by Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung and Rebuilding Korea Party head Cho Kuk, both of whom desperately need victory to help dilute their own judicial risks. [PARK YONG-SEOK]
