The conservative People Power Party (PPP) on Sunday criticized an alleged drunk driving accident involving the daughter of former President Moon Jae-in, likening the behavior to “an act of murder.”

The remarks came a day after multiple local media outlets reported that Moon Da-hye, daughter of the former president from the liberal Democratic Party (DP), was caught driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.

On Saturday, Moon Da-hye collided with a taxi behind her vehicle while changing lanes at 2:51 a.m. in front of Itaewon’s Hamilton Hotel in Yongsan District, according to the Seoul Yongsan Police Precinct.

She was booked on charges of drunk driving in violation of the Road Traffic Act. Her blood alcohol level was reportedly 0.14 percent, far exceeding the legal limit of 0.08 percent — the threshold for revoking a driver's license.

In a commentary released by the PPP on Sunday, vice spokesman Shin Joo-ho said the daughter of the former president committed an act of "destroying other lives and murder, which is not a simple mistake.”

Shin quoted remarks from Moon Jae-in made during a presidential meeting with senior secretaries on Oct. 10, 2018, when he called for more robust measures to curb drunk driving cases.

Rep. Kim Hee-jung from the PPP said Moon Da-hye “caused a car crash while driving under the influence of alcohol late at night in Itaewon during the month to commemorate those lost in the deadly Itaewon crowd crush.”

The crowd crush accident resulted in 159 deaths in 2022.

During a press briefing Sunday, DP floor leader Park Chan-dae called Moon's drunk driving “an act that one should never do.”

Park also said the party shares his stance

The taxi driver suffered a minor injury in the accident, according to Yonhap News Agency. The police will also summon Moon Da-hye on Monday morning to investigate the accident details further.
