Two dead, 12 injured in seven-car pileup on Gyeongbu Expressway

Two people died and 12 others were injured in a seven-car collision on the Gyeongbu Expressway in Cheongju, North Chungcheong on Sunday.
The accident occurred at 6:35 p.m. on Sunday when a Sorento SUV, driven by a man in his 50s, hit the guardrail on the shoulder before colliding with the car in front, according to police and fire authorities.
The Sorento then bounced into the second and third lanes, crashing into several vehicles.
A man and a woman in their 20s, who were in the first car hit by the Sorento, were rushed to the hospital but later died. Twelve others were injured, including the driver of the Sorento, and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The accident caused a two-hour traffic jam on the expressway.
The Sorento driver told police that his brakes failed, forcing him to hit the guardrail in an attempt to stop the car.
Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident.
