Broadcasting Trade Deficit Surpasses $ 200 Million Mark
The trade deficit for broadcasting programs reached 201 million dollars from 1992 to July this year.According to a report issued by Rep. Choi Jae Seung of the National Congress for New Politics on October 23, broadcasting companies including cable TV networks imported 230 million dollars' worth of foreign programs, but exported only 17 million dollars' worth of programs during this period.
Among these figures the big three broadcasters (KBS, MBC, and SBS) bought 130 million dollars worth of foreign productions while cable TV networks and regional broadcasters recorded 18 million dollars and 2.9 million dollars, respectively.
TV programs imported by the big three networks are overwhelmingly imported from the U.S.(33% of all imported programs, but 60% of the total import costs). However 45.9% of TV Programs( 78.8% of the import prices) that were imported by cable TV networks were from the U.S.
