Electronic Transactions Between Korea and Japan to Commence

A trial period of electronic transactions between Korea and Japan will begin next year. In addition, Korea Telecom and Japan's KDD plan to operate joint examinations and diagnostics in early June to solve the Y2K problem.
Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of Japan agreed on several joint efforts, on May 14, at 'The 9th Korea-Japan Telecommunications Committee' held in Tokyo.
Both countries decided to conduct Internet transactions for promoting e-commerce between the neighboring nations after establishing a certification and payment system within this year.
According to this system, by making use of existing financial networks, customers can pay domestically when purchasing products from the other country.
The two countries plan to jointly examine potential Y2K problems in the telecommunications field on June 1 and 3rd, while driving the exchange of information and personnel to set up emergency plans if computer service is disrupted January 1, 2000.
The ministries will boost efforts to test out superspeed satellite communication as well as closely cooperate and administer traditional mail service between the two countries.
