U.S. Troop Accord Grows Nearer

After two days of talks, South Korea and the United States have narrowed differences on some issues of the accord that governs U.S. troops in South Korea, a Foreign Affairs-Trade Ministry official said Wednesday.

The two sides seem to have come closer to an agreement on criminal jurisdiction, but have made no progress on environmental and labor issues, the official said.

Talks aimed at revising the accord began Tuesday.

The agreement became a sensitive issue among many South Koreans this year after a U.S. ground-attack aircraft jettisoned live bombs at a firing range and workers at another U.S. installation dumped toxic chemicals into a drainage system that empties into Seoul's main source of drinking water.
