Assembly Ratifies Pact on U.S. Forces

The National Assembly ratified Tuesday the revised Status of Forces Agreement signed by Seoul and Washington last month after five-years of on and off negotiations.

SOFA governs the 37,000 American troops in South Korea.

Among 23 lawmakers at the National Assembly's Unification, Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee, 12 participated and nine approved the ratification.

Some South Korean civic groups insisted that the revision, the second since 1967, is inadequate and demanded that the lawmakers reject the agreement.

Protesting the ratification, Kim Pan-tae, secretary general of the People's Action for Reform of Unjust ROK-U.S. SOFA Agreement, slashed his stomach three times with a knife at the National Assembly.
