U.S. Will Invite Talks At North's UN Office

The United States will officially propose resuming dialogue with North Korea through that country's representation office to the United Nations in New York, possibly as early as this week, it was announced Tuesday.

The Bush administration is reportedly considering having Edward Dong, director of the State Department's office of Korean affairs, make contacts with Ri Gun, second ambassador at the North Korean representation office, to propose renewing dialogue and possibly present an agenda, timetable and the level of communication for the talks.

Foreign Minister Han Seung-soo met with U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Tuesday to discuss ways to encourage the North to scrap some conventional weapons, which South Korea wants to push in its own talks with the North.
