Spam e-mail soars to 50 a day

Korean Internet users receive an average 50 spam e-mails a day, with 63 percent of those found to be obscene, according to the Ministry of Information and Communication. The ministry said yesterday the number had grown from 4.7 unsolicited emails a day in 2001, to 34.8 last year. The number rose to an average 50 spam e-mails a day as of late March this year. In particular, the ministry cited the rapid rise in obscene emails received by local Internet users, including children. In 2001, 18.5 percent of spam e-mails were classified as obscene. This rose to 61 percent last year and 63 percent as of March this year. The ministry said it had taken tough measures against spammers, but with little effect.
