Former MDP official may be summoned

The Supreme Public Prosecutors Office is considering summoning Kim Ok-doo, the secretary-general of the ruling Millenium Democratic Party during the 2000 legislative elections, for questioning. Mr. Kim is accused of receiving 11 billion won ($9.4 million) in political funds from Kwon Roh-kap, who was in charge of the party’s election affairs at the time.
A prosecutor yesterday said, “We asked Mr. Kim to present certain documents related to the 11 billion won, but he did not respond to our request.” The prosecutor said the office may summon Mr. Kim to find out where the 11 billion came from and how it was used. Mr. Kwon has said the money was provided by “acquaintances,” and said he gave it to Mr. Kim. Mr. Kwon has been detained for receiving another 20 billion won in illegal political funds and bribes from the Hyundai Group.
The office will this week indict Mr. Kwon and release its findings from its investigation so far of allegations surrounding the 20 billion won he is accused of receiving from Hyundai.
