Seoul to boost technology firms

The Ministry of Information and Communication said yesterday that it would spend 400 billion won ($342 million) by the end of this year to improve conditions in the information technology industry. The Information Ministry said that it would spend 60 billion won to replace 50,000 old desktop computers in elementary, middle and high schools. Rather than speaking of helping the students, however, the ministry said the purpose was to help computer makers. Domestic demand for desktop computers has dropped by 21 percent during the first seven months of the year compared to the same period of last year; exports of such computers has plummeted by 82 percent for the period. The ministry will spend 10 billion won to support digital content for high-definition television.
