Parties urge president to decide on affiliation

The Grand National Party and the Millennium Democratic Party yesterday urged President Roh Moo-hyun to declare his political affiliation.
“President Roh must decide on his party affiliation to prove his honesty,” said Representative Hong Sa-duk, the floor leader of the opposition Grand National Party. “That will allow the four political parties to operate on the basis of the truth.”
Representative Park Sang-cheon, chairman of the Millennium Democratic Party, also urged Mr. Roh to make a decision. “All our troubles have their origin in the ambiguity,” Mr. Park said.
The president has not disguised his sympathy for the MDP faction that recently broke away from the party, but he has not left the MDP ― a calculated political decision, critics say, to see which way next year’s legislative elections go.
