Samsung ramps up speedier memory

Samsung Electronics said yesterday that it will spend more money this year to promote its latest speed demon among computer memory chips. The chips are called double-data rate 2 dynamic random-access memory. That mouthful, usually written as DDR2 DRAM, means that the chips are four times as fast as basic computer memory chips. They are used in portable applications, computer servers and in desktop and laptop computers. “We completed a system this year to convert our DDR modules to DDR2 modules. With the mass production of DDR2 memory chips, we hope to get half of the DDR2 memory chip market this year,” a Samsung official said. The largest memory module that Samsung will produce using the new chips will be a whopping two gigabytes; those chips are intended mainly for servers. by Lee Hyun-sang
