Korean IT exports notch new record last month

Exports of Korean information technology were a record $5.9 billion last month. The Ministry of Information and Communication said yesterday that April’s exports were up 42 percent compared to the same period of last year. The trade surplus in information technology was $2.5 billion. Semiconductors were the leading export, followed by cellular phone handsets and computer monitors. Exports rose, the ministry said, mainly because of strong sectoral recoveries in other major technology exporting countries such as the United States, Japan, and England. Some exports from those countries were diverted to meet domestic demand. Digital television sets and broadcasting equipment exports to those countries rose 45 percent, to $250 million.
