Computer firm gets offer from China
Hyunju Computer Co., a South Korean producer of personal computers, said it may be bought by a “large” Chinese PC maker. The stock jumped by the daily limit. Hyunju, worth 5.6 billion won ($5.4 million) by market capitalization, is considering a proposal it received Dec. 23 from an unidentified Chinese company. The offer could be for a strategic alliance and possible acquisition, the Seongnam-based company said today in a regulatory filing. Park Min Kuy, a spokesman for Hyunju, said Lenovo Group Ltd., China’s biggest PC maker, isn’t the bidder and declined to give further details about the possible buyer. Earlier this month, Lenovo said it will buy International Business Machines Corp.’s PC business for $1.25 billion. The agreement, which will make Lenovo the world’s third-largest PC maker, underscores China’s rise as a technology manufacturing center in Asia. The region hasalready home to the world’s two largest consumer electronics and top three digital camera makers.
