A chocolate lover’s dream, perfect for a rainy day

It was a rainy Sunday, and my husband and I had just finished a typical Korean brunch for such a day: bowls of sujebi, a soup consisting of dough pieces torn by hand. After the warm, hearty soup to comfort our souls, we looked at each other and immediately knew what we wanted for dessert.

We headed out to D’Avant, a cafe located in a small alley in the Hongik University neighborhood. The area has a ton of cafes offering diversified fare, but our love for this place has remained unchanged for years.

The cozy interior is decorated in a vintage style, while its music and selection of books and magazines available for guests are what I define as a perfect representation of happiness - so much so that I even copied some of the cafe’s style when I decorated our new apartment.

On my latest visit, the cafe was empty, which is quite abnormal, as I have often seen a long line of people waiting outside.

My husband and I sat at a grand table that is normally occupied by larger parties, and we ordered our favorite items - chocolat chaud (8,000 won) and triple chocolate pancakes (7,000 won).

At D’Avant, the chocolat chaud, or hot chocolate, arrives on a small tray consisting of three components: a pot filled with warm chocolate, a jar of steamed milk and an adorable cup, all laid out for you to make your own drink.

While the drink is often served thin and somewhat diluted in the United States - sometimes with whipped cream and marshmallows to heighten the sweetness - I like it the European way. In other words, the thicker the better.

As I poured the heavy liquid chocolate out of the pot, I could not help but smile. I added a small dose of warm milk, stirred it gently with the tiny tea spoon on the tray and sipped the heavy, bittersweet drink slowly, savoring every drop of the tasty chocolate.

Our main dessert included three pancakes drizzled will chocolate syrup and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The chocolate taste was somewhat subtle after the rich drink. The puffy pancakes, mixed with the melted ice cream, were moist and sweet - perfect when eaten with the cafe’s Americano. The cafe serves Lavazza coffee, one of my favorite brands, and the flavor and scent of my coffee was satisfying as usual. The place also serves other great desserts and drinks such as green tea affogato and matcha, or a finely-powdered green tea, as well as various types of pancakes and waffles. For brunch, you can order the bacon, egg and tomato waffle if you want more protein than sugar.
