FC Seoul struggles to reach old form

Before the 2011 K-League season began, many pundits and fans predicted FC Seoul would have a great chance to repeat their feat of becoming K-League and K-League Cup champions. But Seoul has yet to notch a win and its first few games have been nothing short of disastrous.

The defending champions lost for the second time in three games on Sunday, going down 3-0 against the Chunnam Dragons. So, FC Seoul sits in 15th place in the league, just above Gangwon FC.

But what might be more worrying for Seoul than pure wins and losses is that it has only scored one goal and conceded six, with that one score coming thanks to a Daejeon Citizen defender’s own goal in the second week.

That doesn’t mean everything has gone sour for FC Seoul, however, as the team has two wins in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League so far this year. And to be fair to the defending champions, FC Seoul made plenty of changes since last season and may still be working out some kinks.

The team didn’t re-sign Portuguese head coach Nelo Vingada, who led FC Seoul for just one season, opting instead to sign Korean veteran Hwangbo Kwan, who spent more than a dozen years in Japan as a player, coach and front-office executive. Before the new season even began Seoul lost three first team players, including Korean national team right back Choi Hyo-jin, who had to leave for mandatory military service. Moreover, striker Jung Jo-gook, the team’s second leading scorer in 2010, left for French team Auxerre, while former national team defender Kim Jin-kyu left for China.

But for fans who have waited a long time for the new season, the team’s recent struggles are unacceptable. After the 3-0 loss to Chunnam, Seoul fans rushed to the team’s Web site and asked for Hwangbo to leave.

One fan, with the username “minmul24,” wrote on the site: “Please retire, please get out of here.” Another user with the id “rockjin,” wrote: “Please bring back our old Seoul.”

Still, FC Seoul has some of the best foreign players in the K-League. Along with existing members like leading scorer Dejan Damjanovic and Brazilian defender Adilson dos Santos, Seoul brought back Uzbek midfielder Server Djeparov - a former AFC player of the year who was on loan to Seoul from Uzbek team FC Bunyodkor last year - and also acquired former Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma midfielder Mauricio Molina, who was last year’s AFC Champions League MVP.

Fans expected that these foreign players would boost Seoul’s offense and lead the team to another title, but those expectations have largely fizzled out.

For the foreign players to carry FC Seoul to another title, Hwangbo will have to assign proper roles to Molina and Djeparov but so far, it doesn’t seem that he has found a way to use both players effectively.

And it doesn’t help that Colombian midfielder Molina, who has scored 22 goals in 50 career K-League games, looks lost out there.

But the team’s real problem is that its midfielders haven’t been able to pass the ball with ease, resulting in long passes from defenders to forwards during attacks instead of shorter moves through the midfield. Two of FC Seoul’s starting defensive midfielders, Ko Yo-han and Choi Hyun-tae, seem to be unable to distribute the ball effectively to forwards.

It’s still far too early to tell if FC Seoul’s dream of a repeat title has been dashed but if the team fails to improve next week, fans’ cries for Hwangbo to leave may come true.

FC서울의 몰락 탈출구 있나?

프로축구 디펜딩 챔피언 FC서울의 신음소리가 예사롭지 않다. 구단은 예상치 못한 시즌 초반 몰락에 당황하는 기색이 역력하고 팬심은 싸늘하게 식어가고 있다. 빅클럽 서울의 부진은 폭발적인 인기로 시즌을 시작한 2011 K리그 전체 흥행에도 찬물을 끼얹을 우려가 크다. 여기저기서 앓는 소리가 한꺼번에 나오고 있다.

#명문 빅클럽 서울 맞아?

리그 3경기에서 1무2패로 16개팀 가운데 15위. 3경기 동안 상대 자책골로 기록한 1골을 제외하면 직접 넣은 골이 없다. 지난 시즌 챔피언 서울의 현재 모습은 초라하기 짝이 없다. 서울의 팬심은 실망의 단계를 넘어섰다. 지난 시즌 뒤 보여준 구단의 행보를 보며 “올 것이 왔다”는 싸늘한 반응이다. 서울은 팀을 챔피언으로 이끈 넬로 빙가다 감독과의 재계약을 포기하고 국내 무대 감독 경험이 없는 ‘일본파’ 황보관 감독을 영입했다. 오프 시즌 동안에는 라이벌 수원·울산 등이 대대적 선수 영입을 한 반면 서울은 조용한 겨울을 보냈다. 서울 팬들은 홈페이지 게시판에 “애초에 올시즌에 대한 의지가 부족했던 게 아니냐”고 성토하고 있다. 구단은 새로운 분위기 전환을 위해 참신한 감독이 필요했고, 한정된 예산으로 항상 스타급의 선수를 영입할 수만은 없다고 해명하지만 서울의 지난 겨울 행보는 챔피언팀 답지 못했다고 팬들은 입을 모으고 있다.

#부상에 발목 정신력도 문제

서울은 시즌 초반 뜻밖의 부진에 대해 주전들의 줄부상을 1차적인 원인으로 꼽고 있다. 특히 미드필드 라인이 사실상 전멸한 여파가 공수 전반에 큰 영향을 미친 것으로 보고 있다. 하대성·최태욱·제파로프·한태유·고명진 등 중원에서 활약해야 할 주축 미드필더들이 부상으로 경기에 나서지 못하면서 서울의 중원은 갈피를 잡지 못하고 있다. 데얀·몰리나·이승렬 등 공격수들은 백업 미드필더들이 부진하니 직접 해결하려고 욕심을 부리고 있고, 중원에서 공이 자주 차단되면서 역습으로 쉽게 골을 먹는 패턴이 반복되고 있다. 그라운드에 선 선수들은 위기 속에 더 위축되는 모습이다. 잦은 패스 미스와 범실을 남발하고 있고, 위기를 딛고 일어서려는 강한 정신력도 보이지 않는다. 위기에 빠진 팀을 살릴 황보관 감독의 위기관리 능력과 전술 변화도 눈에 띄지 않는다. 선수들은 의사 소통도 원활하지 않은 듯 서로에게 짜증을 내는 모습이 잦다.

#반전 시나리오 적중할까?

서울은 3라운드 후 맞이 한 2주간의 휴식 기간 동안 팀을 새롭게 추슬러 반전을 노린다. 부상 선수들도 대부분 4월초 복귀가 가능해 라인업이 3월에 비해 한층 탄탄해질 것으로 기대를 하고 있다. 하대성·최태욱 등 노련한 주전급들의 복귀와 함께 골을 넣기 위한 전술을 가다듬어 4월 대도약을 노린다.

다음달 2일 치를 서울의 4라운드 상대는 전북이다. 올시즌 K리그와 아시아챔피언스리그 제패를 노리는 전북은 탄탄한 더블스쿼드를 바탕으로 시즌 초반 순항중이다. 잠잠하던 스트라이커 이동국도 100호골을 쏘며 상승세로 돌아섰다.

만만찮은 전북을 상대로 승리를 따낸다면 싸늘한 팬심을 되돌리고 반전 드라마를 새로 시작할 수 있지만 패한다면 걷잡을 수 없는 수렁에 빠질 수도 있다. 정신력과 전술을 재무장해 새출발에 나서는 황보관 감독은 “나부터 더 반성하고 다시 시작하겠다”고 다짐하고 있다.
