Merck opening an OLED center

With an investment of 10 billion won ($9 million), the OLED Application Center will house advanced facilities to research materials used in OLED technology.
Executives from the German-based company attended a launch event Thursday including Johannes Baillou, Chairman of the Board of Partners of E. Merck KG, Walter Galinat, President and CEO of the Performance Materials business sector and Udo Heider, Head of the OLED business.
Also attending was Michael Grund, Managing Director of Merck Korea, Rolf Mafael, German Ambassador, Yongrae Kim, Director General of Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and representatives of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency.
”This investment is based on our continued faith in Korea’s leadership of the global display industry and confidence in the industry’s long-term growth,” said Johannes Baillou.
Merck Korea’s project team spent one year on the design and construction of the new building supported by Merck’s engineering team from Darmstadt.
Construction was completed last February.
The company vowed to increase investment going forward.
“The OLED Application Center has a range of equipment for OLED evaporation testing and reliability analysis and will introduce other advanced processes such as inkjet printing through continuous further investment,” said Galinat. “With the launch of the new center, Merck Korea now runs both an OLED Physics Application Center and a Chemical Application Center established in 2011 at one site, a first in Asia.”
The company also expects the institute to serve its customers and partners, which include Samsung and LG Electronics.
“We will continue efforts based on our customer-centric strategy of helping our customers succeed in their markets,” said Grund. “We are committed to research and development of advanced technologies that live up to our customers’ needs and expectations. I believe this is the key factor for a successful partnership.
“We develop today what our customers will apply tomorrow.”
