A traditional city with seaside charm : Gangneung offers visitors coming for the Winter Olympics rustic beauty and unique cuisine

The city’s unique natural elements, which include a lake, a pine forest and the East Sea, is just one of many attractions the city has to offer. Gangneung will please visitors with fashionable cafes and a traditional food market where people can take Instagram-worthy shots. And now, traveling around the region has never been easier following the construction of the Gyeonggang KTX line - which crosses the country from Incheon International Airport to Gangneung - and the highway that connects east Hongcheon to Yangyang in Gangwon.
For those planning to visit Gangneung, here are some travel spots that will definitely impress your Instagram followers.
The most famous beach in Gangneung, Gangwon, is Gyeongpo Beach, which is often referred to as the “national beach” for its popularity. But further south of Gyeongpo Beach, located not far from Gyeongpoho Lake, is Gangmun Beach which is filled with installations that function as special photo zones that make for the perfect picture. One of the installations includes a bench shaped like a diamond ring. Another is an empty rectangular frame which is tilted towards the beach. People can sit on the bench placed in front of the frame and take a photo of themselves enjoying the view. The impressive ocean scenery makes this particular installation a popular spot, and there’s often a line of people waiting for their turn to take a shot.
Events for the upcoming Winter Games will take place in two places: Pyeongchang and Gangneung, the coastal city to the east. Ahead of the Olympics, four ice arenas have opened in Gangneung. While looking at the new ice venues sounds exciting, the public is not allowed in until the Olympics begin. Instead, you can drop by the 2018 PyeongChang House, which feature exhibits that show the process of preparing for the Olympics. Also available are 4-D facilities where you can try out winter sports like ski jumping and bobsledding. The center is expected to attract around 2,000 visitors a day. Entrance is free.
Myeongju-dong, the former home of a major government office during the Joseon era (1392-1910), experienced a decline after Gangneung city hall was relocated to Hongje-dong in 2001. But when the Gangneung Culture & Arts Foundation moved to Myeongju-dong, the neighborhood became a hip area for tourists to check out. The old school became an exhibition hall, and Bongbong Bangatgan, a former mill, is now a cafe selling hand-drip coffee. People in the neighborhood offer tours to visitors for free. Call the Gangneung Culture & Arts Foundation (033-647-6800) at least three days before your desired tour date.
There is a small embankment located in between Jumunjin Harbor and Yeongjin Harbor. A certain barricade there became a popular destination after it was featured in last year’s hit tvN series “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.” In the drama, which is also known as “Goblin” the area is where the two main characters, played by Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun, meet. For safety reasons, the city government had to install a guard post to prevent people from getting hurt since so many people were coming to the area to take pictures. “On weekdays, more than 1,000 couples come to visit,” said Kim Yeong-soo, who works as a guard at the embankment.
Here in Korea, no special Olympic item made as big of splash as the Pyeongchang long padded coat, which was officially sponsored by the PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee. While the jackets are no longer available, there are nearly 500 items featuring the Olympic mascots - Soohorang and Bandabi - being sold at prices ranging between 20,000 ($18) and 30,000 won. In Gangneung, you can purchase these limited edition goods at Gangneung Station and Gangnueng’s Pungmul flea market. The best-selling item at both stores is a Soohorang and Bandabi doll set, which costs 35,000 won.
Travelers to Gangneung usually took a few days off to visit Korea’s east coast. But the city has transformed into a more convenient location to visit thanks to the newly-opened Gyeonggang KTX line, which allows travelers to reach Gangneung from Seoul in just an hour and a half. Just 15 minutes away from Gangneung Station is a street lined with cafes near Anmok Beach. One cafe to check out is Kikrus Coffee, located at the entrance of the cafe street. It opens at 7 a.m. and is known for its briquette bread. A box filled of 34 costs 16,000 won.
Chodang village in Gangneung is known for its tofu. The small neighborhood is home to as many as 21 restaurants featuring different tofu dishes. Chodangmyeonok’s dubu samhap, or tofu with spicy pork and grilled kimchi, was developed in 2016 by a local named Jeong Eun-suk along with Gangneung’s city government. Priced at 25,000 won, the dish made it on the list of 10 special Gangneung dishes for foreign visitors to try. This list was created by the Gangneung municipal government to introduce the city’s distinct delicacies to spectators coming in from overseas for the Olympics.
In the center of Gangneung are two traditional markets - Jung ang and Seongnam - that have each stood for more than 50 years. (As Seongnam market surrounds the Jungang market, visitors often refer to both as Jungang market.) There is not a single empty stall in the markets, and it’s easy to find popular street foods like fried shrimp, hotteok (fried pancakes) and fish cake croquettes on sale. Locals recommend Bulgaemi Shikdang, a homey restaurant selling boribap (boiled barley rice), priced at 6,000 won. The 25-year-old diner sells favorites like doenjang jjigae (fermented soybean paste stew).
Taste the local brews
Budnamu Brewery, located in Hongje-dong, is a must visit for those who enjoy a good drink. Launched by five young beer lovers in an old brewery in 2015, the space features 120 seats and is visited by around 600 people a day. Only 10 minutes by car from Gangneung Station and a 10-minute walk from Gangneung Express Bus Terminal, it’s a great place to begin or end your journey.
Haslla IPA, (Gangneung was previously known as Haslla) and Minori Session, made of rice harvested in the city’s Minori village, are some of the bar’s most popular choices.

2018 평창 겨울올림픽 개최지 강원도 강릉은 현재 대한민국에서 가장 핫한 여행지다. 한국관광공사가 지난해 SNS 버즈량(온라인에서 언급한 횟수)과 내비게이션 티맵 최종 목적지 빅데이터를 분석한 결과에 따르면, 인기 여행지 3위(1위 제주, 2위 속초)이자 2016년 대비 관심도 증가율(205%)이 가장 높았던 도시가 강릉이었다. 호수와 솔숲 그리고 동해바다 등 자연환경은 강릉이 가진 매력의 일부일 뿐이다. 세련된 카페, 먹거리 널린 전통시장 등 젊은 여행객의 SNS 감성을 자극하는 명소가 차고 넘친다. 양양고속도로와 KTX 경강선 개통으로 교통 편의성이 개선된 것도 강릉의 인기를 부추긴다. 올림픽 분위기가 무르익고 있는 강릉에서 먹고, 찍고, 즐길 만한 인스타그램(이하 인스타) 인증샷 여행지 9곳을 골랐다.
찍으면 건진다는 해변
강릉에서 가장 유명한 해변은 ‘국민 해수욕장’ 격인 경포해변이다. 바다 사진을 찍기 위해서 경포해변을 먼저 찾는다면 인증샷 계의 하수다. 고수가 몰리는 해변은 따로 있다. 바로 경포해변 남쪽의 강문해변이다. 경포천의 물줄기가 빠져나가는 강(江)의 문(門)이라는 이름을 지닌 이 바다에는 사진을 찍기 좋은 대형 조형물이 들어서 있다. 바다를 향해 훤히 뚫려 있는 액자, 다이아몬드반지를 본뜬 벤치 등이 이름난 촬영 명소다. 최고 인기 조형물은 바다를 한 폭의 그림처럼 담을 수 있는 이젤이다. 주말에는 이젤 앞에서 사진을 찍기 위해 줄을 서서 기다려야 할 정도다. 삼각대와 셀카봉을 준비하는 게 좋다. 다른 여행객과 서로 사진을 찍어주는 미덕도 잊지 말자.
미리 체험하는 겨울올림픽
평창 올림픽은 분산 개최된다. ‘설산’을 타는 설상 종목은 평창에서, ‘얼음’에서 타는 빙상 종목은 강릉에서 치러진다. 올림픽을 앞두고 강릉에 빙상 경기장 4개가 신설됐다. 미리 경기장을 구경하고 싶은 마음이 절로 들 법하지만, 올림픽 개막 전까지 일반인의 출입이 제한된다. 아쉬운 마음은 강릉시 초당동에 있는 ‘2018 평창동계올림픽 홍보체험관’에서 달래보자. 올림픽 유치와 준비 과정을 보여주는 전시관으로 연중무휴 운영된다. 스키점프·봅슬레이 등 입체영상을 실감 나게 즐길 수 있는 4D 체험시설이 있어 1일 2000명이 방문할 정도로 인기 있다. 하키나 컬링 장비를 착용하고 사진을 찍을 수 있다. 입장료 무료.
타박타박 구도심 산책
여행자 사이에서 새롭게 조명되고 있는 오래된 강릉 거리가 있다. 조선 시대 강릉대도호부관아가 있던 명주동이다. 한동안 최고 번화가였지만 2001년 강릉시청이 홍제동으로 이전하면서 쇠락했다. 2016년 강릉문화재단이 명주동에 터를 잡고 문화공간을 동네 곳곳에 이식한 이후, 사진 찍기 좋은 빈티지한 동네로 입소문이 났다. 오래된 학교는 전시실이 되고, 옛 교회 건물은 공연장이 됐다. 폐방앗간 ‘봉봉방앗간’은 옛 간판과 상호를 그대로 유지한 채 핸드드립 카페로 변신했다. 명주동 주민이 마을을 안내하는 문화해설사로 나선다. 최소 3일 전 문화재단(033-647-6800)에 전화로 예약해야 한다. 올림픽 기간에도 신청할 수 있다. 무료.
‘도깨비’ 촬영지 성지순례
강릉 주문진항과 영진항 중간께 바다 쪽으로 돌출된 작은 둑이 있다. 파도에 모래가 쓸려나가는 것을 방지하는 방사제다. 누구도 관심을 두지 않던 방사제가 별안간 강릉의 대표 명소로 떠오른 것은 순전히 2017년 1월 종영된 드라마 ‘도깨비’의 영향이다. 드라마에서 주인공 김신(공유 분)과 지은탁(김고은 분)이 만났던 방사제는, 이제 커플 여행객이 영원한 사랑을 기약하는 장소가 됐다. 강릉시청은 안전을 대비하기 위해 올해 1월 방사제 옆에 경비 초소를 설치했다. 주문진방사제 안전관리원 김영수씨는 “평일에도 사진을 남기려는 커플 여행객이 1000명 넘게 찾아온다”고 전했다. 올해 1월 29일 주문진 방사제에 닿는 333번 해안 순환버스도 신설됐다. 안목해변 등 해안가 명소에 쉽게 닿을 수 있다.
올림픽 한정판의 매력
한낱 기념품이 이 정도까지 이슈가 된 적은 드물었다. 평창 겨울올림픽 기념품 이른바 ‘평창 굿즈’ 얘기다. 2017년 11월 출시된 구스다운점퍼(롱패딩)은 평창 굿즈 ‘대란’의 시작이었다. 옷을 구매하려는 사람들이 밤새 줄을 서는 진풍경이 벌어졌다. 평창 스니커즈, 평창 백팩도 롱패딩 못잖은 인기를 누렸다. 평창 굿즈는 패션 제품 외에도 올림픽 마스코트 수호랑, 패럴림픽 마스코트 반다비를 활용한 캐릭터 상품 500여 종이 있다. 대부분 2~3만원이면 살 수 있는 상품이다. 평창 굿즈는 공식 판매점 평창스토어에서만 판매하는데 강릉에는 강릉역과 강릉 월화풍물시장 등 딱 두 군데가 있다. 2017년 9월 개장한 월화풍물시장점은 강릉 최초 평창스토어다. 인기 상품은 수호랑과 반다비 인형 세트(3만 5000원).
여행의 시작은 모닝커피
강릉이 당일치기 여행지로 변모했다. 서울~강릉을 1시간 30분 만에 주파하는 경강선 KTX가 지난해 12월 개통한 덕분이다. 강릉 여행 시간을 최대한 확보하려면 청량리역에서 오전 5시 32분 출발하는 첫차를 타는 게 좋다. 7시 8분 강릉역에 도착하면 택시를 타고 곧장 바다로 향하자. 차로 15분 정도면 카페가 밀집한 안목해변에 닿는다. 카페거리 초입에 오전 7시부터 여행객을 맞는 카페 키크러스(033-653-6004)가 있다. 다른 카페는 일러야 오전 9시께 문을 연다. 훈훈한 카페 안에서 바다 전망과 일출을 감상할 수 있다. 아메리카노(4500원) 말고도 연탄빵(34개 들이, 1만6000원) 등 요깃거리도 판다.
올림픽 도시의 올림픽 메뉴
강릉시 초당동은 두부로 이름난 마을이다. 면적 2.88㎢에 불과한 초당동에 두부 전문 음식점만 21곳이 있다. 초당두부 하면 순두부를 떠올리지만, 초당동에서 맛볼 수 있는 이색 두부 요리도 있다. ‘초당면옥(033-652-3696)’이 만드는 두부삼합(2만 5000원)이다. 초당동에서 나고 자란 정은숙 사장이 강릉시청과 공동으로 2016년 개발했다. 올림픽 기간에 강릉을 찾아올 외국인에게 추천하는 메뉴인 ‘강릉특선음식10선’에도 들었다. 담담한 두부, 고소한 돼지고기 수육에 이북식 젓갈 가자미식해를 곁들여 먹는 두부삼합은 씹을수록 고소하다. 손님 둘 중의 한 명은 이 메뉴를 찾는다. 강원도에서 난 식재료를 고집한다.
시장 먹거리 종결자
영동의 중심지 강릉에는 반세기가 넘는 역사를 자랑하는 전통시장 중앙시장과 성남시장이 있다. 중앙시장을 성남시장이 감싸고 있는 모양새인데, 여행자는 구분을 두지 않고 중앙시장으로 통칭한다. 중앙시장에 약 300개, 성남시장에 약 100개의 점포가 있다. 빈 점포가 한 군데도 없을 정도로 성황이다. 새우강정·호떡·어묵고로케·소머리국밥·장칼국수 등 이름난 시장 먹거리가 즐비하지만, 현지인이 추천하는 맛집에도 도전해보자. 불개미식당(성남동 62-4번지)은 시장 상인이 즐겨 찾는 25년 전통의 보리밥집이다. 푸짐하고 건강한 집밥 같다. 고추장보다 직접 담근 된장으로 끓인 찌개 국물로 비벼 먹는 것을 추천한다. 보리밥 6000원.
수제 맥주 신흥 명소
강릉 홍제동에 자리한 ‘버드나무브루어리’는 여행자들이 참새가 방앗간 찾듯 꼭 한번 들르는 술집이다. 경기대 평생교육원 양조학교에서 연을 맺은 20~30대 맥덕(맥주 덕후) 다섯 명이 의기투합해 2015년 차렸다. 폐업 후 방치됐던 양조장을 120석의 맥주 가게로 개조했다. 하루 600명이 찾아와 강릉 물로 빚은 수제 맥주를 음미하고 간다. 강릉역에서 차로 10분, 강릉고속버스터미널에서 걸어서 10분 거리여서 강릉 여행의 시작이나 끝으로 삼기도 좋다. 1인석이 있어 혼자 맥주를 마시기에도 부담 없다. 강릉시 사천면 미노리에서 수확한 쌀로 빚은 맥주 미노리세션(400㎖ 6000원), 강릉의 옛 이름 하슬라(큰 바다)를 딴 하슬라 IPA(400㎖ 7000원)가 인기 상품이다.
