Feminist event aimed at making streets safer

A feminist magazine will host a “Women-Only Party” at Seonyudo Park on Oct. 15, as a protest to show that women should be able to walk around the city after dark without fear.
Goh Ju-yeong, a planner of the event said, “The recent serial killings by Yoo Yeong-cheol and other sexual assault incidents are demoralizing women, and instead of strengthening civil safety, the authorities are asking women not to walk around after dark.” She added, “We decided to hold this party to show that streets after dark should be open spaces.”
In the Joseon era, women wore special garb that covered most of their faces and bodies when they walked out at night. In the 1970s, women were forbidden to walk in the streets after dark.
Entitled, “No Blood, No Tears Night,” the event is sponsored by the feminist magazine “If.” Participants include feminist groups such as the Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center. It is open to all women. Throughout the night, feminist movies will be shown, along with swing dance and mime performances.
Entrance is free of charge, but attending women must bring their own drinks and food. Female volunteers will ensure security and safety; men are forbidden to venture near the event.
