Se So Neon breaks with tradition : The young indie band that got its start on the streets of Hongdae released its first EP in October

At the end of October, the band released its first EP titled “Summer Plumage.” Magazine M, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, sat down with the three young artists for an interview. The following are edited excerpts.

So-yoon: I think people were curious about us because a woman is the lead singer, and also the music we play is unique. I think we are getting more attention than we deserve, but nevertheless we are very thankful.
Fancy Moon: Although our format is simple, our sounds are very solid.
Gangto: I think the synergy that each member creates when we play live is critical. But just looking at our songs, So-yoon’s voice takes up a large part, which a big advantage in our band.
So-yoon: I heard that a lot of the listeners thought the vocalist was a guy (laughs).
Why did you title the album “Summer Plumage?”
Gangto: Summer plumage is the colorful flock of feathers that grows when a bird sheds its old feathers to prepare its body for a new season.
So-yoon: We gave the album that name to imply that the songs contain the brightest and shiniest parts of us. I think it fits with our band name too, so we made it the album title.
Is the band name derived from the children’s magazine Se So Neon?
So-yoon: I saw a book about design from the 1980s and came across the typography for “Se So Neon” there. I was drawn to that unique calligraphy and liked the sound of it. I had no idea that the text was the title of a magazine until much later.
Can you describe the single “I’m Watching a Loneliness Just Arisen”?
So-yoon: I made the song when I was in high school in 2014. I just wrote down how I felt, and the lyrics contain the heavy and lonely feelings I felt at the time. Although it sounds like the music is flowing gently, it has all the necessary parts - an introduction, development, a turn and a conclusion. The song has a psychedelic and dreamlike quality, and it’s comfortable to listen to. But I also want the listeners to feel the unfamiliar side of the music too.
Fancy Moon: To preserve the naturalness of So-yoon’s voice and melody, we didn’t emphasize the instruments for this song.
Your lyrics on the album are also eye-catching. For “The Waves,” and “Gurumi,” it’s remarkable how you poetically describe one specific scene instead of narrating a story with beautiful lyrics. What are your reasons behind this depiction?
So-yoon: It would be boring to just elaborate situations that everyone knows. I like to discover something new from the fragments of lives people just happen to pass by without noticing.
Who are your favorite musicians?
Fancy Moon: I enjoy listening to classic jazz, such as music by Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis.
Gangto: When I was younger, I liked Mitch Mitchell, who was a drummer best known for his work in the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He was originally a jazz drummer, so he uses lots of jazz style techniques, and they go along very well with Jimi Hendrix’s rock music.
So-yoon: I really didn’t have any. When I was really studying guitar, I practiced the music of Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, and Eric Clapton.
Are there any places that you especially want to perform at?
Gangto: College festivals. I heard that the performers receive a lot of money. (laughs)
Fancy Moon: Conan O’ Brien’s “Conan” show. (laughs)
So-yoon: I thought I would like to perform at the Glastonbury festival in England, but nowadays I want to perform at major award shows, where I can show off an unconventional type of performance.
One of the reasons why the band receives so much attention is that Se So Neon’s leader is a 20-year-old woman, who brings this powerful energy to the band. You are also in charge of the songs and lyrics. How are you when you are writing music?
So-yoon: I could say that my personality is like the two sides of a coin. When I’m writing songs, I become very meticulous and sentimental. On the other hand, when I’m on stage, I become… irrational, I guess? The raw and beastly side of me comes out of the shell. I always am a bit grossed out whenever I see myself perform (laughs).
I’ve always wanted to break that typical image of “Hongdae female musician.” You know, just meekly sitting down on the stage with the long hair down her back, crossing her legs and singing a song with a weak voice while strumming tunes on her guitar.
As for me, I want to show everything to the audience without any pretending. I want to prove that there can be cool female musicians, and more will come about very soon.

[인터뷰] 지금 홍대는 '새소년'의 시대
지난 계절 ‘긴 꿈’의 라이브 무대를 처음 봤을 때부터 별렀다. ‘허스키한 목소리, 이 빈티지한 사운드가 스무 살이라고?’ 작곡·작사·기타를 도맡는 약관의 프런트 맨 황소윤(20) 그리고 드러머 강토(24), 베이시스트 문팬시(22)로 구성된 새소년은 현재 홍대 인디신에서 가장 뜨거운 이름이다. 정규 앨범 하나 없이 각종 록 페스티벌에 오르고, 포털사이트 메인을 장식하고, 티켓 오픈 1분 만에 단독 공연이 매진 될 정도니 말 다했다. 지난 10월 말 드디어 그들의 첫 정규 EP 앨범 ‘여름깃’이 세상에 나왔다.
-중성적인 목소리, 미니멀하면서도 시원스러운 록사운드, 나이답지 않은 원숙함까지. 새소년은 앨범 발매 전부터 호기심을 일으키는 밴드였다. 한동안 주변에서 ‘새소년 노래 들어봤어?’라는 이야기가 유행처럼 돌았다.
황소윤 “프런트맨이 여성이라는 조합도 그렇고 음악도 그렇고, 신선하고 특이해서 많이들 궁금해하는 것 같다. 과분하다고 생각될 정도인데, 여러모로 감사하다.”
문팬시 “단순한 구성이지만 사운드도 탄탄한 편이니까.”
강토 “라이브 무대에서는 각자의 연주가 만들어내는 에너지의 힘이 크다고 생각한다. 근데 확실히 음원에서는 소윤이의 목소리가 차지하는 비중이 크다. 그게 밴드의 무기기도 하고.”
황소윤 “보컬이 남자인 줄 알았다는 이야기도 많이 들었다(웃음).”
-첫 앨범 타이틀을 ‘여름깃’이라 붙였다.
강토 “새가 계절이 바뀔 때 새로 돋는 화려한 빛깔의 깃털을 여름깃이라 한다.”
황소윤 “가장 반짝반짝할 때를 담은 앨범이라는 의미랄까. 3번 트랙 곡명인데, 밴드명과도 잘 어울리는 것 같아서 붙였다.”
-밴드명은 예전 어린이 잡지 ‘새소년’에서 따온 건가?
황소윤 “우연히 1980년대 배경의 디자인 서적을 읽다가 ‘새소년’이라는 타이포그래피를 봤는데, 그 특유의 글씨체와 어감에 꽂혔다. 그 타이포그래피가 잡지명인지는 한참 뒤에 알았다.”
-타이틀곡 ‘나는 새롭게 떠오른 외로움을 봐요’는 어떤 노래인가.
황소윤 “고등학생 때인 2014년에 만들었는데, 당시의 무겁고 고독한 감정들을 여과 없이 써 내려갔던 노래다. 그냥 잔잔히 흘러가는 것 같지만 나름 기승전결이 뚜렷한 곡이다. 사이키델릭하면서도 몽환적인 느낌이라고 해야 하나. 편안하면서도 마냥 편하지 않은, 부드러우면서도 불편한 노래처럼 들리면 좋겠다.”
문팬시 “멜로디와 보컬 본연의 느낌을 살리기 위해, 악기는 최대한 비우는 느낌으로, 담백하게 쳤다. 특히 베이스는 어떤 기교도 부리지 않았다.”
-반대로 연주 실력을 맘껏 뽐낸 곡은.
문팬시 “‘파도’. 거의 연주곡이나 다름없다.”
강토 “‘여름깃’도.”
황소윤 “타이틀곡 외에는 전부 그루브 넘친다.”
-가사도 예사롭지 않다. ‘파도’도 그렇고 ‘구르미’ 그렇고. 하나의 이야기를 아름다운 노랫말로 서술하기보단, 인상적인 한 장면을 시적으로 묘사하는 인상이다.
황소윤 “누구나 다 아는 상황을 나열하는 건 재미없으니까. 스쳐 지나갈 수 있는 순간들 속에서 새로운 걸 발견하는 작업이 좋다.”
-소프트 록에서 블루스까지, 불과 6곡이지만 곡마다 스타일이 확연히 다르다. 하나의 공통점이라면, ‘빈티지하다’라는 것 정도?
황소윤 “우리 셋 다 음악이나 옷, 소품 등등에서 빈티지한 스타일을 좋아한다. 기타 칠 때도 최대한 빈티지한 톤을 살리고자 했다.”
강토 “빈티지한 사운드를 내려고, 50년 된 낡은 심벌을 쓰기도 했다.”
-동경했던 뮤지션이 있다면.
문팬시 “베이스 연주자 가운데는 자코 파스토리우스. 실은 웨인 쇼터, 마일스 데이비스 같은 클래식한 재즈를 더 즐겨 들었지만.”
강토 “어릴 땐 지미 헨드릭스 익스피리언스의 드러머였던 미치 미첼을 좋아했다. 재즈 드러머 출신이라, 재즈 스타일의 테크닉을 많이 쓰는데, 지미 헨드릭스의 록 스타일과 되게 잘 어우러진다. 그러면서 자기 색깔도 분명하고.”
황소윤 “딱히 없었다. 한창 기타 연습할 땐 스티비 레이 본, 비비 킹, 에릭 클랩튼 음악을 따라 연주하곤 했다.”
-앞으로 서보고 싶은 무대가 있나.
강토 “대학교 축제. 돈을 많이 받는다고 들었다(웃음).”
문팬시 “코난 오브라이언이 진행하는 ‘코난’(TBS) 쇼(웃음).”
황소윤 “예전엔 영국 글래스턴베리 같은 곳에 서고 싶다는 생각도 했는데, 요즘엔 대형 시상식처럼 좀 더 색다르고 재밌는 무대를 보여줄 수 있는 무대가 더 탐난다.”
-소윤은 곡을 쓰는 자아와 라이브를 하는 자아가 상당히 달라 보인다.
황소윤 “정말 다르다. 곡을 쓸 때는 세심하고 감성적인 사람이었다가, 무대에 오르면 뭔가 비이성적이 된다고 해야 하나. 야수 같은 면이 있다. 내 영상을 볼 때면 늘 좀 징그럽다(웃음).”
-예스럽고 강렬한 에너지를 뿜어내는 밴드의 중심이 스무 살 여성이라는 점도 새소년을 주목하게 하는 이유 중 하나일 거다. 곡과 가사를 전담하는 것도 황소윤 쪽이고. 요즘 시대가 원하는 밴드라는 생각을 자주 했다.
황소윤 “판에 박힌 홍대 여성 뮤지션의 이미지를 깨고 싶다는 생각은 예전부터 했다. 무대에서 머리 길게 늘어트리고 얌전히 앉아, 통기타를 대충 치고, 다리 꼬고 힘 빠진 목소리로 노래를 부르는 이미지 말이다. 난 최대한 꾸밈없는 그대로를 보여줄 생각이다. ‘이렇게 멋진 여성 뮤지션도 있다’ ‘더 멋지고 알 수 없는 여성뮤지션이 앞으로 더 많아질 거다’ 이런 걸 몸소 보여주는 것이 내 할 일라고 생각한다.”
-새소년을 어떤 밴드라고 정의할 수 있을까.
황소윤 “사실 ‘무슨 음악을 하는 밴드인지 잘 모르겠다’라는 이야기를 들을 때 가장 좋다. 하나의 장르로 규정할 수 없다는 게, 새소년의 장점이자 색깔이라고 본다. 누가 어떤 밴드냐고 물어보면 늘 말한다. ‘그냥 새소년스러운 음악을 한다’고.”
문팬시 “‘새소년스럽다’는 말이 관용어처럼 들릴 수 있는 그 날까지 파이팅(웃음).”
