[NEW FILMS]"I Am Sam"Drama / 132 min. / English -- Opens Friday
Sam Dawson (Sean Penn) has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old, but is attempting raise his daughter, Lucy (Dakota Fanning), on his own. Needless to say, the local social services department takes a dim view of that, setting the stage for a hard-bitten lawyer (Michelle Pfeiffer) to take Sam's case on a pro bono basis to prove to her co-workers that she has a heart.
A solid performance by Penn, in a role that severely limits his emotional range, practically makes up for the sugary-sweet story designed to persuade viewers that Lucy must remain with Sam. Directed and co-written by Jessie Nelson. Co-starring Laura Dern and Richard Schiff.
