Why you can’t abandon your country (KOR)

In the 9th year (699 AD) of King Munmu of Unified Silla, an envoy of the Tang Dynasty came. As it was just 23 years after the Silla Dynasty borrowed the Tang’s power to conquer Goguryeo and Baekje, the Tang envoy was arrogant. Before leaving Silla, he became greedy after seeing a bow among the tributary gifts.

Because the bow could shoot an arrow as far as 1,000 steps, the Tang emissary demanded the Silla court send the craftsman, who made the bow, to China as a gift. The craftsman was Gu Jin-cheon, a government official. But King Munmu could not reject the request of the envoy.

When Gu arrived in China, he pleased Emperor Taizong of Tang. The emperor soon gave him materials to make the bow. But the bow he made could only shoot an arrow as far as 30 steps. When Taizong asked why, he responded that it was due to the poor material. The emperor sent people to Silla to get material for the bow. However, even with the material brought from Silla, the bow could only go 60 steps.

When the emperor asked why, Gu replied that this time the problem was the humidity in the process of shipping the material by boat. The clever emperor realized that Gu was hiding a secret. The emperor threatened to kill him, but Gu did not share the secret method and died. He was concerned that his people could be killed by arrows from the bow.

This episode shows how important a national secret and patriotism are. Even a low-level technology official had such loyalty for his country. But today, Korean experts often leave their country after inventing cutting-edge technology and gaining fame.

It is forgivable to leave Korea if they cannot develop their talents here. But if their actions directly harm the country, I cannot help but condemn them. Even if the country abandoned its people, they cannot abandon their motherland, just as we cannot abandon our mothers.

조국을 걱정했던 구진천(仇珍川)

신라 문무왕 9년(서기 699년)에 당나라 사신이 왔다. 이때는 신라가 당나라의 힘을 빌려 고구려와 백제를 멸망시킨 뒤라 당나라 사신의 태도는 방자했다. 당나라 사신은 신라를 떠나면서 조공품 가운데 신라의 활을 보고 욕심을 냈다. 그 활이 1000보(步)를 날아가는 것을 보더니 아예 그 활을 만든 장인(匠人)을 인신 조공으로 요구했다. 그 장인이 아찬(阿湌) 벼슬의 구진천(仇珍川)이었다. 문무왕은 당나라 사신의 요구를 거절할 수 없었다.

당나라에 도착한 구진천은 황제 당 태종의 마음을 즐겁게 해 줬다. 황제는 곧 재료를 주면서 구진천이 활을 만들도록 했다. 그런데 그가 만든 활은 30보밖에 나가지 않았다. 의아하게 생각한 당 태종이 이유를 묻자 구진천은 재료가 나쁘기 때문이라 대답했다. 이에 당 태종은 사람을 신라에 파견해 활 재료를 구해 오도록 했다. 그러나 새로 가져온 재료로 만든 활도 60보밖에 나가지 않았다.

당 태종이 다시 그 이유를 묻자 구진천은 이번에는 재료를 배로 운반해 오는 동안 습기가 찼기 때문이라고 대답했다. 그제야 영악한 당 태종은 구진천이 활을 만드는 비법을 숨기고 있음을 간파했다. 결국 당 태종이 죽이겠다고 협박했으나 구진천은 활을 만드는 비법을 끝내 전하지 않고 죽었다. 그 화살에 자기 동포가 죽을 것을 걱정했기 때문이었다.

국가의 기밀이란 이토록 중요한 것이며, 자기 나라를 사랑한다는 것 또한 이토록 뜨거운 것이다. 지난날에는 하급 기술 관리에게도 조국을 사랑하는 충정이 있었는데, 오늘날 한국 사회의 전문가들은 첨단 기술을 발명해 명성을 얻으면 조국을 떠나는 경우가 있다.

자기의 능력을 펼 길이 없어 떠나는 것은 용서할 수 있으나 그들의 처사가 조국에 누가 되는 경우라면 지탄할 수밖에 없다. 조국이 우리를 버려도 우리는 조국을 버릴 수 없다. 어머니를 버릴 수 없듯이.
