[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Appalled by phone company
Published: 02 Apr. 2003, 00:38
My home uses a fixed telephone line for Internet service. Last month the telephone bill was 15 times higher than usual. When I checked what happened, I found that my son, a middle school student, logged on an adult Internet site, which said, “Freely surf the site and pay the fee conveniently with your telephone bill.”
To log on the site, my son needed a resident identification number, which proves that he is an adult. He confessed that he used someone else’s number he got from a document in my room.
I, first of all, scolded him. But then I got upset with the telephone company. How can the company cooperate with Internet sites that contain harmful content and use a flawed adult identification system?
I do not know what kind of service contract the telephone company and the site made. But it appears that the company is helping a site that promotes illegal content.
