[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Teachers hit by Buan ills
Published: 12 Oct. 2003, 21:53
The article “Buan Students Return to School” by Seo Hung-sik last Tuesday illustrated the sad situation of students caught in the struggle between protesters (often their parents) and the government. What was not mentioned was the damage done to others ― namely the teachers. Why has no one spoken about them?
Teachers have contracts to teach those students. They cannot teach elsewhere because the school year has started and it would violate their professional responsibilities if they were to take another job. Teachers get paid for teaching and they expect to teach at a regular time each day. When they don’t teach, they don’t get paid, or at least will have to make up the missed days at the end of the school year.
