[LETTERS to the editor]Change English teaching system

The government has proposed that English be used fully in schools in Incheon and Jeju in the future. We have seen how English as an official language in education has contributed enormously to the rise of Singapore and India in the economic realm.
This should also come as an opportunity to realize there is a structural defect in the nation’s present English education. The value of English as a mere instrument for college entrance has overwhelmed the importance of it as a medium to the world beyond our boundaries.
We are probably the only nation where a person with over 10 years of public English education has no choice but to take additional English education in a private institution. It is time for a major change.
