The 26-year-old actor Cho Seung-woo and his sister Cho Seo-yeon have been selected to play together in an upcoming performance of the hit musical “Rent,” according to Seensee Musical Company, which is preparing the production for an opening next January.
For the musical, Cho Seung-woo will play struggling musician Roger who is HIV positive. His sister, Seo-yeon, takes the role of street singer Maureen.
“Rent is a distinguished piece depicting the dreams and aspirations of young people in New York,” said Song Hye-seon, the head of PL Entertainment, Cho Seung-woo’s agency. “Cho Seung-woo has been interested in this piece for a long time. He found a way to arrange his schedule around the musical this time and agreed to appear on stage.”
But he won’t be playing Roger throughout the show’s run. He will take the role only until early February, his agency explained. After that, a second cast will perform the remaining shows. The stars for that period of the show’s run have not yet been announced.
Cho’s comeback to small Daehangno theaters is welcome news for his fans who want to see him up close and in person. It has been 18 months since he left Seoul’s theaters to make films. His recent work includes “Tajja,” “Domabam” (Love Phobia) and “Marathon” (Running Boy). He is most famous for his performance as the lead character in “Jekyll and. Hyde.”

As for Cho Seo-yeon, 29, she is excited to be performing on stage with her brother for the first time.
“My brother was hesitant about accepting the musical offer when he found out that I passed the audition,” the actress said. “But I told him there is nothing to worry about because Roger and Maureen will not be fighting each other on stage. I thought this was a great chance for us to act together.”
Although relatively unknown compared to her celebrated brother, Cho Seo-yeon has been a proficient musical actress, making her debut in 1998 with a role in “Hardrock Cafe.” She has also appeared in “Grease” “Singin’ in the Rain” and “The Sorrows of Young Werther.”
“Rent” is an American Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical, with lyrics and music by Jonathan Larson. It debuted in New York City in 1996 and is still playing on Broadway where it is the seventh-longest-running Broadway musical of all time. Based on Puccini’s opera “La Boheme,” the musical centers on a group of impoverished young artists and musicians working to survive in the shadow of AIDS in New York’s Alphabet City in the early 1990s.
