China and Korea open hotline, air route during Wen's visit
Taking the opportunity of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's official visit to Seoul yesterday, South Korea and China further cemented a growing diplomatic friendship by agreeing to open a military hotline between their naval and air forces, Blue House Spokesman Yoon Seung-yong said.

원자바오 중국 국무원 총리의 방한을 기회로 삼아, 한국과 중국은 양국 해ㆍ공군 간 직통 통신망(핫 라인)을 구축하기로 하는 등 외교적 우호관계를 더욱 다졌다고 윤승용 청와대 대변인이 어제 밝혔다.
Wen is on a two-day visit en route to Japan during a particularly complex period for the two former enemies, who opened diplomatic relations in 1992. Officially, Wen's visit, his first to Seoul, marks the start of Korea-China Friendship year, but more importantly it comes as the two countries are engaged in crucial diplomacy to try and keep the six-party nuclear talks with North Korea on track.

There have also been disquieting notes over Chinese insistence that the ancient Korean kingdoms in the north are actually a traditional part of China. This has caused nationalist sentiments in Korea to flare over the issue of Chinese expansionism. The conflict "should not be an obstacle to the development of bilateral ties," the Blue House said yesterday.

한반도 북쪽에 위치했던 고대 한국의 왕국들이 실제로는 중국의 일부분이었다는 중국측의 주장에 대해서 우려의 목소리들도 있었다. 이 같은 중국측의 주장은 한국의 민족주의를 자극시켜 중국의 팽창주의에 대한 반발을 불러 일으켰었다. "그 역사분쟁이 양국관계의 발전에 걸림돌이 되지 않아야 한다"고 청와대가 어제 밝혔다.
Increasingly important, given the pressure of the Korea-U.S. deal, is a bilateral free trade deal between China and Korea. The two leaders noted that preliminary talks have gotten off to a "smooth start" with a joint research committee looking into a trade agreement. Formal talks are expected to start next year.

한미 자유무역협정 타결에 자극을 받아 한중 양국간의 자유무역협정 논의가 점점 더 중요한 문제가 됐다. 양국 지도자들은 예비회담에서 자유무역협정을 조사하는 공동연구위원회를 설치함으로써 "순조로운 출발"을 시작했다고 언급했다. 정식회담은 내년에 시작할 것으로 전망된다.
Roh and Wen also discussed cooperation for third-generation mobile technology. Roh asked for Beijing's support for Korean companies trying to make inroads into the Chinese market, and Wen voiced hope for cooperation with Korea. Wen visited Korea's biggest mobile operator, SK Telecom, early yesterday morning to inspect the latest gadgets on offer.
