Art luminary forged her academic credentials

Shin Jeong-ah, a well known art history professor at Dongguk University, is one of the country's better known art curators and experts. A rising star in her field, Shin, 35, was about to add another title to her impressive resume on July 4 when she was named the artistic co-director of the 2008 Gwangju Biennale, Korea's biggest arts event. The official announcement was slated for Monday.

동국대 예술사 교수인 신정아는 미술전시 기획자와 미술계 전문가로 잘 알려져 있다. 미술계에서 떠오르는 스타인 신교수(35)는 7월4일 한국에서 가장 큰 미술전시회인 광주 비엔날레의 2008년 공동예술감독으로 선임되면서 그녀의 화려한 이력서에 또 다른 경력을 막 올려놓을 참이었다.
Only one problem. Shin has just been caught falsifying her academic records, including her claim to hold a doctorate from Yale University and two degrees from the University of Kansas.
Lee Sang-il, Dongguk's dean of academic affairs, held a press conference yesterday on campus, "Yale University notified us that Shin has never registered with the school, let alone received a doctoral degree." The University of Kansas told Yonhap yesterday that Shin attended the school from 1992 to 1996, but did not graduate.

그런데 한가지 문제가 생겼다. 신교수의 예일대 박사학위와 캔사스대 학위들이 위조된 것으로 드러난 것이다. 이상일 동국대 학사지원본부장은 어제 기자회견을 열어, "신교수가 박사학위를 받은 것은 고사하고 예일대에 등록한 적도 없다고 예일대측이 우리에게 통보해왔다."고 밝혔다.

She would be the youngest art director of the Gwangju Biennale, if her appointment goes through. The Gwangju event organizers, however, plan to hold a press conference today to revoke their initial decision.

Shin, who has been in Paris since suspicion over her background surfaced last week, plans to return to Korea on Friday, according to a source close to her. The suspicion over her academic credentials surfaced when an official at Dongguk University told Yonhap the school had received a tip that Shin forged her academic records and submitted a fake doctoral dissertation when she applied to become a professor in 2005.

신교수와 가까운 지인에 따르면 지난주 학위위조 의혹이 불거졌을 때부터 파리에 머물러 있는 신교수는 금요일쯤 귀국할 계획이다. 신교수가 학력을 위조했으며 2005년에 교수로 임용될 때 가짜 박사학위 논문을 제출했다는 제보를 받았다고 동국대 관계자가 연합통신에 말하면서 신교수의 학위위조 의혹이 불거졌다.
Shin has denied the allegations. "If I lied about my academic records, it would have been checked when the university was deciding to hire me," she told the JoongAng Ilbo Monday from Paris. According to Dongguk's Lee, the school did not verify Shin's bachelor's and master's degrees when she was hired. He said the school received a positive response at the time from Yale, but he did not elaborate on what that meant.

신교수는 학위위조 사실을 모두 부인했다. 파리에 있는 신교수는 월요일 중앙일보와 전화통화에서 "만약 나의 학력에 대해 내가 거짓말을 했다면, 동국대가 나를 임용할 때 확인했을 것이다." 고 주장했다. 동국대 이상일 학사지원본부장에 따르면, 동국대는 신교수를 임용할 때 학사학위와 석사학위는 확인하지 않았다고 말했다. 당시에는 예일대로부터 긍정적 답변을 받았다고 그는 말했으나 긍정적 답변이 무엇이었는지는 자세하게 설명하지 않았다.
