Korean missionaries kidnapped by Taliban in southern Afghanistan

A group of Koreans on a summertime missionary trip to Afghanistan was snatched from a bus in the strife-torn south of the country by Taliban militia members on Thursday, Korean authorities said yesterday.

탈레반은 한국인 18명(남성 3명과 여성 15명)을 억류하고 있다고 어제 확인했다. 로이터 통신은 탈레반의 카리 유수프 아마디 대변인이 한국시간으로 오늘 오후 4시30분까지 아프가니스탄에 UN 평화유지군으로 주둔중인 한국군을 철수하지 않으면 인질들을 살해하겠다고 밝혔다고 보도했다.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry said it believes about 20 Koreans were kidnapped. The ministry said there may have been three more Korean victims from a non-governmental organization.

피랍 선교봉사자들은 경기도 분당 샘물교회 신도들이다. 이 교회 권혁수 장로는 “오늘 아침 정부 관계자로부터 납치 소식을 들었다. 상황을 더 파악하기 위해 노력 중이다.”고 말했다.
The believers, in their 20s and 30s, led by Pastor Bae Hyeong-gyu, left for Afghanistan on July 13, the church said. The group was last heard from on Thursday when they said they were leaving the southern city of Kandahar for the capital Kabul. They were to participate in volunteer work in a hospital and a Korean-run kindergarten and were scheduled to return home Monday.
배형규 목사가 이끄는 20대와 30대 신도일행은 7월13일 아프가니스탄으로 떠났다고 교회가 밝혔다. 남부 도시 칸다하르에서 수도 카불로 이동한다고 말한 목요일 이후 그 일행으로부터 소식이 끊겼다. 그 일행은 병원과 한국인이 운영하는 유치원에서 봉사활동을 참여한 뒤 월요일에 집으로 돌아올 예정이었다.
At the time of the kidnapping, the group was on a bus, Afghan authorities said. An empty bus was found in Ghazni Province where the kidnapping took place, police said. They immediately began an investigation.

피랍 당시 그 일행은 버스를 타고 있었다고 아프가니스탄 당국이 말했다. 납치가 발생한 가즈니주에서 빈 버스가 발견됐다고 경찰이 밝혔다. 그들은 즉시 수사를 시작했다.
The Afghan Embassy in Korea said it has asked visa applicants to refrain from visiting the southern part of the country, where kidnapping is common and fighting between the Taliban and government forces is ongoing. The embassy said it normally issues visas for group visits, but rarely individuals.

주한 아프가니스탄 대사관은 비자 신청자들에게 탈레반과 정부군의 전쟁이 지속되고 있고 납치가 자주 발생하는 남부지역 방문을 자제해줄 것을 요청해왔다고 말했다. 아프가니스탄 대사관은 주로 단체로 방문하는 경우 비자를 발급해주고 있으며, 개인에게는 거의 비자를 발급하지 않는다고 말했다.
The government said there are about 200 Koreans in Afghanistan. About 120 of them are missionaries who have been there for an extended period of time.
정부는 아프가니스탄에 200여명의 한국인들이 머물고 있다고 말했다. 그 가운데 120여명은 체류기간을 연장한 선교사들이다.
