Britney Spears is the eighth best-selling female artist in American music history with album sales topping 83 million worldwide. But her personal life lies in tatters. She’s divorced, struggling to get custody of her kids and has entered drug rehabiliatation. But all is not lost for Britney fans. Her fifth album “Blackout,” released last Monday, has been performing respectably in the charts. Reviews from the music press have been largely positive and the single, “Gimme More,” charted strongly around the world.
This is high quality song-and-dance pop, although her high-pitched vocals are whiny at times. There isn’t a weak track among the 12 songs and in the hypnotic “Piece of Me,” Britney pleads, “I’m famous and people won’t leave me alone.”
Fans of Beyonce, Gwen Stefanie or Madonna will savor these fresh new songs, but if you prefer Kelly Clarkson or Alicia Keys, you might want to blank out “Blackout.”
