Tycoons pledge to spend more, but ask for help

친기업 성향의 이명박 대통령 당선자는 어제 대기업 총수들을 만났다. 이 당선자는 경제 살리기를 약속했고 대기업 총수들은 내년에 투자를 늘리겠다고 화답했다.
"The only thing that a government can do to create jobs is to encourage corporations to invest," Lee told the business leaders at the Federation of Korean Industries, in Yeouido, central Seoul. "I'm here to pledge that I will make a friendly environment for entrepreneurs to operate their businesses. That's why I joined today's gathering as my first meeting with business leaders after the election."
이 당선자는 여의도 전경련 회관에서 대기업 총수들에게 "정부가 일자리를 창출하기 위해 할 수 있는 유일한 일은 기업들이 투자하도록 장려하는 것 뿐이다"고 말했다. "기업가들이 기업하기 좋은 환경을 만들겠다고 약속하기 위해 여기 왔다. 그래서 대선 이후 재계 지도자들과의 첫 번째 만남으로 오늘 모임에 동참한 것이다."
In response, Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo unveiled a plan to increase 2008 spending by 57 percent, to 11 trillion won ($11.7 billion). Hyundai's investment budget will climb 4 trillion won from this year.

이에 대한 화답으로 정몽구 현대자동차 회장은 57% 늘려 11조원을 200년에 투자하겠다는 계획을 발표했다. 현대의 투자규모는 올해보다 4조원 늘어난다.
Chung told reporters before entering the meeting room that about 5.2 trillion won will be spent to build a steel plant, being constructed by Hyundai Steel, and about 3.5 trillion won will be used to nurture research and development activities.

정 회장은 회의장에 들어서기 전에 기자들에게 약 5조2천억 원은 현대제철이 짓는 제철소를 건설에 사용할 것이고 약 3조5천억 원은 연구개발을 육성하는데 사용할 것이라고 말했다.
Other business leaders also said they would increase capital spending, but did not mention exact amounts. Park Sam-koo, the chairman of Kumho Asiana Group, said he would increase research and development investments by 10 to 20 percent.
다른 대기업 총수들도 투자를 늘리겠다고 말했으나 구체적인 수치는 밝히지 않았다. 박삼구 금호아시아나그룹 회장은 연구개발 투자를 10~20% 가량 늘리겠다고 말했다.
Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-youn said he would focus on aggressive mergers and acquisitions with foreign companies and the president of Shinsegae, Koo Hak-su, vowed to build more retail stores in China and create more job opportunities. Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee did not mention any investment plans.

김승연 한화그룹 회장은 외국기업들을 공격적으로 인수합병 하는 사업에 중점을 두겠다고 말했고, 구학수 신세계 사장은 중국에 소매점포를 더 지어서 일자리를 더 창출하겠다고 말했다. 이건희 삼성그룹 회장은 투자계획에 대해서 말하지 않았다.
As Lee, the 66-year-old president-elect, asked corporate leaders to invest more and create more jobs, the businessmen also asked Lee to deregulate anti-corporate policies concerning business activities and solve touchy issues, including illegal walkouts. According to a transcript issued by Lee's spokesperson, the corporate leaders said unstable labor-management relations are keeping foreign companies from investing here.
이 당선자(66)는 재계 지도자들에게 투자를 늘리고 고용을 늘려줄 것을 부탁했고, 대기업 총수들은 이 당선자에게 기업활동에 관련된 반기업적 규제들을 풀고 불법파업과 같은 민감한 문제들을 풀어줄 것을 부탁했다. 이 당선자의 대변인이 배포한 대화자료에 따르면 재계 지도자들은 불안정한 노사관계가 외국기업들의 한국투자를 가로막고 있다고 말했다.
