Vet battles to save wildlife in Taean oil spill

When he was young, Kim Sin-hwan believed he could cure the world if he saved the country from the military regime. Instead, he now cures injured birds.
Kim is a veterinarian who specializes in treating endangered birds.

젊은 시절, 김신환씨는 군사 정권으로부터 나라를 구하면 세상을 치유할 수 있다고 생각했다. 지금, 그는 대신 다친 새들을 치유한다. 김씨는 특히 위험에 처한 조류의 치료를 전문으로 하는 수의사다.

1988년, 그가 부인과 함께 처음 이 곳 충남의 작은 마을로 이사 왔을 때만 해도 새들을 치료하는 수의사는 별로 필요가 없었다. 그는 대부분의 시간을 새들이 치료하는 게 아니라 새들을 바라보면서 보냈다.
His favorite time of year is the migration season in winter when he drives down to Cheonsuman Bay and photographs the birds.
The bay is a major transit route for migratory birds heading to their breeding grounds in Siberia. Up to 400,000 pass through the bay, including black-faced spoonbills, wild geese, swans, ducks and white cheeks. Thousands of birdwatchers flock here every year.

김씨는 가장 좋아하는 계절 겨울이 되면 차를 몰고 천수만으로 가 새들의 모습을 사진으로 찍었다.
천수만은 시베리아에서 태어난 철새들이 들르는 주요 도래지다. 저어새, 기러기, 백조, 오리 등 최대 40만 마리의 철새가 천수만에 들른다. 이들을 보기 위해 매년 수천 명의 탐조가들이 몰린다.
Until the fateful oil spill in Taean in December, Kim made a living helping farmers deliver calves on local diary farms.
But since last month, Kim’s life has been turned upside down. He now spends more time looking at dead birds than live ones.

지난 12월 태안에 발생한 치명적인 기름유출 사고 이전까지만 해도 조류 전문 수의사인 김씨는 생업을 위해 인근 목장의 암소가 새끼를 낳는 것을 돌봐 주며 살아야 할 정도였다.
하지만 지난달부터 김씨의 삶은 뿌리째 뒤바뀌었다. 그는 요즘 살아있는 새보다 죽은 새들을 보는 일이 훨씬 많아진 것이다.
After a barge slammed into a Hong Kong-registered oil tanker carrying 260,000 tons of crude oil last month, leaking 10,500 tons into the Yellow Sea, Kim’s been tending to many injured birds.
지난 달 바지선 한 척이 26만 톤의 원유를 실은 홍콩 선적 유조선을 들이받아 만500톤의 원유가 서해로 쏟아진 뒤 김씨는 많은 부상당한 새들을 돌봤다.
They’re delivered to his clinic in old cardboard boxes, completely covered in oil. Kim’s clinic in Seosan, about half an hour from Manripo, the hardest hit beach, is the closest place for treating birds.

그의 진료소에는 기름을 뒤집어 쓴 새들이 낡은 종이 상자에 담겨 도착했다. 서산에 있는 김씨의 진료소는 가장 큰 피해를 입은 만리포에서 30분 거리로 새들을 치료할 수 있는 가장 가까운 곳이었다.
