Antique alleys hide treasures

"Three thousand years and counting! This is a treasure that will see daylight one day! It’s a pearl in the mud," insists Kim Ki-soon with a sweeping arm gesture. Kim is the owner of Song Juk Dang, one of the 125 or so antique shops located in Dapsimni’s antique shopping district.
"3000년 이상 된 보물로 언젠가는 햇빛을 볼 것이다. 이것들은 지금 흙속의 진주다." 답십리 골동품 거리에 자리잡은 송죽당의 김기순 사장은 손으로 가게안 물건을 주욱 가르키며 이렇게 말했다. 답십리에는 약 125개의 골동품 가게가 있다.

A questioning look or a cocked head is all that’s needed to fire up Kim. “This may be cheap now, but further down the road I can see a couple of zeroes getting attached to the price tag,” says Kim nodding his head with strong conviction.
김 사장은 고개를 끄덕이며 "지금은 이 물건들 값이 싸지만 먼 미래엔 가격표에 '0' 몇개가 더 붙을 것"이라고 자신했다.
그는 고객의 얼굴에 비치는 뭔가 궁금한 듯한 표정, 또는 작은 몸짓 하나에도 물건을 팔기 위해 목소리를 높인다.

If that is not enough, here comes the killer. He presents the classic I-too-want-it-for-myself argument, pointing at a row of pottery, “Some of them I am keeping for myself. Yup, that’s right.”
'값이 싸다'는 것만으론 충분치 않다고 느꼈던 걸까. 김 사장은 진열된 도자기를 가르키며 '나도 갖고 싶은 물건'이란 오랜 장사수완을 발휘했다. "몇몇의 도자기들은 팔지 않고 내가 가지고 있을 것"이라고 말하며.

Kim has been refining his selling skills on the same spot for the past two decades.
Although the district is not as well known as Insa-dong, which also specializes in antiques, Kim says he has no complaints.
김 사장은 지난 20년간 같은 자리에서 골동품을 팔며 장사 수완을 익혔다.
골동품 거리로서 답십리가 인사동 처럼 유명하지는 않지만 큰 불만은 없단다.

Dapsimni pales in comparison to Insa-dong where apart from antique shops tourists can relax in cafes and restaurants and get hot drinks on a winter’s day. Not so here. All the shops are consolidated into three large buildings located on the same backstreet that starts at exit No. 2 of Dapsimni subway station on Line No. 5.
인사동에는 골동품 가게외에 관광객들이 즐길 수 있는 카페,레스토랑에 추운 겨울날 뜨거운 차 한잔 마시며 쉴 수 있는 곳들이 있지만 답십리는 상대적으로 그렇지 못하다. 골동품 가게들은 지하철 5호선 답십리역 2번 출구 인근의 커다란 빌딩 세 곳에 몰려 있다.

Buddha statues made of stone greet visitors as they leave the subway exit, but there are no shops on either side of the street. Instead, the journey starts at a large unprepossessing building about 30 meters away from the station.
지하철역을 빠져 나오면 돌 부처상이 손님을 맞지만 거리에 골동품점은 없다.
골동품 거리 여행은 지하철역 출구에서 30m 정도 떨어져있는 커다란 빌딩에서 시작된다.
But go inside and it’s a different story. Like a labyrinth inside a pyramid, narrow hallways separate the numerous stores.
The lighting is dim but adds to the close atmosphere that you might expect from antique shops.
건물 안에 들어서면 딴 세상이 펼쳐진다. 마치 피라미드 안의 미로처럼 건물내의 좁은 통로를 사이에 두고 수많은 골동품 가게가 들어서 있다. 불빛은 희미하지만 오히려 골동품 상점만의 독특한 분위기를 낸다.
